Ok I'm at Audi they have listened to sound coming from engine ignition from recording and first reaction from master tech is everything sounds like it's rattling so I could be getting somewhere here with a bit of luck one thing I have noticed is a pattern which it's does, after a run let car cool down to about 70• and then start it up and that's when it does it more often so sat in Audi waiting for car to cool down at the moment so hopefully techs and hear it

Going in on Sunday night after a good thrashing ready for Monday morning techs heard the noise and hopefully will sort it out for me I must say they have been very patient with me and have done everything they can so with a bit of luck and diagnosis of the faulty parts they can put it right and I have a mint RS3 !!

Is this @Poole Audi ?

I have to say my experiences with them , limited though they were to the front brake issue, was top notch!!

I can't fault them Colin they have been really good to me always free to sort things out so what more can you ask for the only problem I have had is that every time I took car in it never did the noise so I recorded it

Ha ha yeah well you never know ! There an awesome looking car but out of my leauge on cost quite happy to stick with the RS3 and will probably look at trading mine in for an 8v at the end of next year but lesson learnt on the one I own at the moment would never buy a Rs car from a non Audi dealer was a big mistake on my part

They're in another league and like you say, so is the price so not affordable for most.
Very excited to see the new RS4 going back to the original forced induction!
yeah buying approved used from Audi is going to be the safest route to RS ownership. That or buy one from a fellow club member on here when you know the history

I think I heard the techs at Audi say there are two parts that could be causing the issue I may have this wrong but I think they said I could be two variable valve guides at the top near the chain ?? It could be that oil is running out of them and causing the nasty rattling so will see by Monday

The variable valve guides would be a possible route cause as although I'm a bit out of my depth when it comes to engine intricacies of this engine but they can require some hydraulic operation. It does seem the TFSi engines across the range seem a little seceptable to cold start rattle. They're certainly not the quietest engine I've had!

I've got a slight noise from the gearbox when idling in Park or Neutral but having spoke to many others it seems it's not uncommon and it's not enough to worry me. Will get the stronic serviced this year and see if there are any marked improvements

I`m surprised the variable cam sprockets weren`t changed when they did your chain. On mine when the chains etc were changed the variable sprockets were also swapped. It turned out that it was in fact these that were the culprit. If you have access to VCDS you can check the valve timing isn`t jumping about all over the place.

Ok I will pass info onto techs on Monday if these two parts were not replaced at the same time as the chains would these parts being faulty affect the new chains I have had fitted ? do you think once these are replaced all should be ok or does it all need to be re done ??

If the sprockets do turn out to be faulty I doubt they would affect the chains at all.

In the end it wasn`t my chains or tensioners that were faulty but the sprockets but Audi UK wanted to be sure so they said just change everything relating to driving the cams.I`m staggered yours weren`t done.It means the whole lot has to come apart again.Hope you get it sorted.

They told me on Friday that they won't need to take chains out again and can go in from the top to replace them without taking gear box off ?
