Hi new to the forum have owned my mk1 12 plate RS3 for 3 weeks all fine on test drive checked the engine out has new brakes all round and new tyres all seemed good full Audi history but now has started to sound a bit odd on start up and sometimes when warmed up there is like two sounds to the engine there is this intermittent rattle that comes and goes sounds like it coming from the front of the engine but not sure, have taken it into Poole Audi they have done some checks said its ok to drive but there not totally happy with it so am a bit worried looks like are be taking out extended warranty asap and get it in there again but I just wanted to ask has anyone experienced this or could help diagnose what this could be ? And is there any RS3 members in the Bournemouth area cheers David !

Is it a rotational noise ?

What sort of RPM is the 'rattle' occurring ?

Does it sound metallic in origin ?

Has the car been serviced meticulously and at Audi MD ?

Yeah it is rotational !

The sound is there on tick over,
And the tappets are noisy up to about 3000 rpm
But that's not all the time
Does sound metallic defiantly,

Car was last serviced at Audi a year ago and has only done 4700 since
car was in at Audi last week with this issue and there said they were not sure what it could be
Audi technical sent software update free of charge but sound is still there made no difference

Hi Neil yes I read your topic earlier today will be phoning Audi in the morning to take out extended warranty for a year have spoke with them already about it as they gave already looked at it I said to them that it could be the timing chain tentioner and they didn't agree they said it sounded like it was coming from the front so wish me luck just out of couriousity would that effect the tappets as well ? Hopefully get car in there beginning of December bit pissed off as only owned it for three weeks and already have a problem but apart from that loving the car just need to get wheels refurbed as got a couple of Nike in them but all new brakes fitted all round and new mpss all round so can't complain to much the car is standard no mods so shouldn't have any issue with Audi thanks for the reply and will let you know what comes of it

There is a sound recording of my noise somewhere in the topic. It does sound a bit like extremely noisy tappets.Hope it`s nothing serious.

Not sure I can help much with the tappet noise but feel free to contact me and perhaps listen to mine ?

Also can recommend a brilliant wheel refurb place that have a lot of experience of rotors if you havent managed to find one yet ?

Hi David

I was going to recommend silverwheels in ferndown. They refurbished mine and did a great job. Remember me to them when you go!!

Yes would be good to meet up - especially if you are considering a sports exhaust at some point as I currently have a Milltek non-resonated and secondary cat delete? Have to be before January as I will probably be returning the car to standard exhaust then.

I work from home most of the time so I am generally here - more so at start of week. Just PM me if you would like to meet up.

Extended warranty taken out with Audi today £949 for the next 12 months with option to extend after a year covers anything mechanical or electrical so will leave it a couple of weeks before sending it in, at least it's covered now if it does turn out to be timing chain and after reading Neil's topic sounds like it is almost cried myself to sleep last night after reading what he had to go through to get it right !! 😁

It's amazing how extended warranty costs seem to vary quite a bit

Yeah I think different garages must use different insurance company's with there warranty deals this is with axa so no excess and total single claim limit is £26.760 so should be pretty safe with that !

Since mine has come back from Audi after 16 days! various work been done , mine has developed a rattle when its warm but its very hard to get it to do it for Audi , very intermittent and usually after a long drive.

its a tapping noise at idle,  touch any revs and it goes away. I would say it does sound metallic too ?

i really hope these are not your symptoms.

p.s sorry for stealing your thread.
