IMO you won't get any outright performance difference between Tesco and Shell 99 oct fuels.

IMO, there is little issue (all things being equal - as in tuning quality overall) with running a generic remap, versus a custom remap at say Stage 1.  Unless there are weird oddities with any specific platform.

The Bosch MED 17 ECU in the RS3 is a proper piece of kit if utilised appropriately.

Yep by comparison the Bosch MED 17 ECU is an advanced bit of kit which is why I am curious as to how all these tuning boxes manage to supposedly easily coax more power and torque out of the engine by clipping in a few cables.

Can't help wondering if the new super ECU will be fighting the eroneous signals from the box and constantly trying to re-learn parameters which are outside of the factory limits (boost pressure and fueling for example). This might be ok in the short term and produce good performance gains over standard, but whats it like after say 3 or 4 months and beyond - it's not uncommon for tuned cars to get the engine light come on (usually due to a sensor reading out of spec) or see very high engine temps (which is not good if the ECU can't reign back some of the power to compensate)

I tend to re-map most of my cars while they are still inside the warranty period. The quality, and more importantly the longevity of the map performance is therefore paramount for trouble free running. It's for this reason that I will opt for a custom map installed by a trusted tuner over a generic map (not wanting to start a debate on custom v generic maps in this thread).

Getting back to the MTM box - this has attracted my attention as it seems to be a bit different (in how it's hooked up and how it works) compared to many other 'boxes' out there. I am really interested in how it performs........ and dare I say ............ may even consider buying one if it is a good as I hope!

Based on my experience a tuning box can work fine with the MED 17, as long as the tuning box "map" isn't that aggressive. I've known (or at least heard of, not my own experience) for tuning boxes on the MED 17 to cause erratic performance.  I've got my own opinions on that.

For sure, a remap can provide a much better experience and level of performance.  I was dead against Tuning Boxes until I actually tested one on my A45 (quickly changed my opinion based on my testing).  It was ultimately replaced with an ECU remap and performed better as expected.  I'll just follow the same process this time.... just for information and comparison on a different platform.

In respect to custom vs generic map....

We (several of us in the A45 community) tested 5 different maps from 5 totally different MB tuners.

Whilst there were slight differences in the driveability, none were better - they were just different, we logged the mother out of these cars.  With all performance logs you couldn't get a hair between them.  We then took them down Santa Pod and on one occasion 4 of cars were within 2/100ths of each other. lol  You literally couldn't pull them apart.

IIRC Out of the total of 5, 2 were custom and 3 were the tuners generic tunes.

Again, assuming a level playing field of platform and ECU tuning skill / knowledge, at Stage 1 I suspect real world differences are negligible.

At the end of the day we may all have our own preferred methods and tuners, and that is absolutely fine. :)

P.S. Thanks for the comment about the project thread. :)

I have a DTUK box if anyone wants to grab it (unlikely anyone is passing by my house though unless there is anyone coming from up north).
