Update, the car has had oil and filters done yesterday but since I told you all about it the noise hasn't come back . I hope it stays that way.

I wonder if the Audi tech reported he couldn't replicate the problem this time.

I was advised to speak to Lee Hancy but he left a few months ago. I now deal with Adam .I think his last name is Larkinson.A real good guy,He`s heard the chain noise when I first took the car to them .The "tech" ?? is Phil somebody. He was the one who looked horrified when I mentioned tensioners and chain. I get the impression this is way out of his depth.
Yeah Adam Larkinson is the guy I deal with, good guy, never lets me down now, seems like Bolton Audi had management issues earlier, but it looks like they have got their stuff sorted! what have they said then?

Well the car`s in again for a full week at least.I`ve left them a usb with 6 really good chain noise recordings.
I`m 99% sure I know what the problem is. 18000 mile oil change.I build race engines for a living. They only rev to 6800 rpm and due to regulations give less BHP/Litre than an RS3 .Nobody in their right mind would ever run anywhere near that mileage before changing the oil.
When I bought my car it had done about 26000 miles and the oil STUNK of petrol. It was Audi changed at the recommended 18000 so in just 8000 miles the oil was junk. It`s this petrol dilution that thins the oil and can cause critical tolerances to go out of spec.due to wear. All engines will get some petrol dilution but high performance ones will always get more due to many different factors.Changing the oil may help short term because the viscosity is thicker but the chain noise will come back later.Due to now out of spec tolerances the tensioners aren`t getting enough oil on start up with the low pressure oil pump.As soon as the high pressure pump kicks in the noise stops instantly.Getting Audi to delete the low pressure pump is a nightmare. They just don`t understand these engines.
