WOW.STAGGERED. Chain noise gone.
Got the car back.Super Ted needs a medal. It`s transformed. From cold start before the engine always sounded noisy. This wasn`t the chain just general engine noise.

It was defo louder than a hot start.I used to cringe listening to it willing it to go off fast idle. It`s so quiet now.It was dark when I picked it up so will check tomorrow for any bodywork marks.Checked the rims already ,spotless.

If anyone out there has the slightest hint of  a chain noise I would get it checked asap.I saw the invoice Bolton were sending to Audi for the work.

£3775.90  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She said that was trade price so if you have to pay god only knows what it would be.

A MASSIVE THUMBS UP TO BOLTON.

So what is on the invoice in terms of what they have done / replaced for future reference?

Unfortunately Carol at Bolton wouldn`t let me see what was on the invoice but there was a file about 20mm thick full of A4 pages She said a lot of that was emails to and from Audi UK .They changed the oil first ,no change, then the oil pressure relief valve,no change. Then they had to take readings from a stack of measuring blocks on their vcds at varying temperatures .None of this helped so they stripped the engine and just changed everything chain related.

Thanks for the feedback on the fuel priming start up, that make sense and I'll give it a go.

I didn't mean to give the impression that the start up noise from my A4 is ok, it is horrible, but on an old car that's not worth with much you can ignore it - sort of.  Also with 118k miles you can understand that the noise is maybe not that damaging - maybe entering dodgy territory here?

As for Mr0120 raptor did Audi identify the problem?  New designs or defect parts?

They never really identified the actual part that failed so just changed everything.

That's rubbish, where's the learning?  What age is your RS3?

I'm going to ask a basic question here but related, the RS3 engine is based on the Ford/Volvo unit, or is it?  Do they report similar problems?

The Audi engine isn't a variant of Volvo

I had a Focus ST years back and the 5 cylinder Volvo engine in that is a good deal bigger than the relatively compact Audi 5 cylinder engine.

Audi UK asked for all the parts to be returned to them to identify the issue.Audi don`t actually make any of the chain related parts. They are bought in.I suspect it`s the variable cam timing pulleys as the tech told me the chains were both still tight so that rules out the chains and tensioners. I had a look at them and the tensioners had no play at all. It`s 2012

Wonder if they have something similar to the dephaser on Clio Sport cars, had one of these rattle and they can be quiet or make a terrible racket
