As I have absolutely nothing to hide and because I'm straight up, I'd rather put this on my project thread, where it could do the most damage to me and my project.  That last bit sounds weird I suspect, but because I have nothing to hide I feel this is the best place to put this.

My car has never never had any "special" maps created for banzai drag runs.

The Stage 1 map I had ran 11.80s and 116mph back in the Summer of 2016.  No other hardware apart from the map and secondary deletes was on it at the time.

My Stage 2 map was created shortly afterwards.  I ran in October of last year (iirc) and the car ran a gash 11.86s quarter (due to major major traction issues), but wanged in a 119mph trap speed.  I knew at this point the map was very strong.

On the SAME Stage 2 file I ran in early 2017 and I got my 11.55s quarter in March and then several 11.66-11.67's quarters the following month at a fully prepped Peak Performance Day at the pod (these day's tend to slow our types of cars down, being AWD and road tyres).

That Stage 2 file had been on the car from October 2016 - April 2016 (7 months).  Nothing wrong with that map whatsoever on my car.

I changed the map late April 2017 (at my request with an ignition curve of my specification) the day before I met with some other cars at the pod.  This was not pre-planned, it was done the day before the event after a brief conversion (two days before the event) I had with my tuner.  This was purely for me to see if an altered ignition curve (a curve I specified) could get me in the 11.4's.  Nothing more and nothing less. Alas the car appeared to be slower based on my logs and of course the times I achieved that day.  It was what it was.

I am a privateer and the car is my own.  I do not work for or have any commercial interest with the tuner(s) I commission.  Yes, I am friends with a number of them (have been for many years), but there's nothing untoward going on.  I'm a paying customer.

I have NEVER had my tuner attend these events with the RS3 to even watch me, let alone adjust my RS3 map at the drag strip.

I have NEVER stripped weight out of the RS3 for/at these events.

I have ALWAYS used pump fuel at these events.

I have ALWAYS used OEM tyres at these events..... in fact the fastest times were done on stock tyre pressures.

I have certainly NEVER had another turbo fitted to the RS3, other than the one that has only just been fitted (EFR Hybrid) and currently in testing.

It is 100% factual that this is not the first time I have achieved good results on cars.  I've been doing this type of project work for over 12yrs at this kind of anal level, and every car I have done it with (four including this one) have achieved great results on competitive track events, drag strip and dynos etc.

I'm not suggesting that this has been a matter of fact as I had have my fair share of trauma along the way.  It costs me a lot of time and money to do this..... and a boat load of stress (like you wouldn't imagine).  I do this because I absolutely love it.  Above all, I love to share the experiences with others.  Yes, I know I waffle on a lot, but if only one person finds it interesting that's more than enough for me.  I certainly don't do this just to "win".  Or course I would like the cars to do well, but who wouldn't.

Nearly every single achievement I have made with all my cars I have been slagged off, accused of cheating etc behind my back.  100% never with evidence either.  I've been told by others "You can't do that", "That won't work", "It will blow up".  Some people have even done it to my face. lol (at least they have some balls).  You know what... that just spurs me on even more.

I'm 100% happy that my integrity is intact at all times.

It is what it is and I fully appreciate that when you stick your head above the parapet you've got to expect others to make potshots.  I expect it, but it still doesn't make it alright.

I'm a car nut that can't help buying a car and altering it.  I do this because I love it.

I always encourage conversation and interaction on my project threads.  If you have a question, heard a rumour or just want to call me an idiot... feel free.  I know I'm an idiot so that will be a waste of bandwidth. lol

Anyways...... apologies to you all for this, but this was something that I felt needed airing as things have started to get a touch "wild" on the rumour mill.

Hopefully I'll have some dyno data to share with you all this coming week, and I hope to hit the drag strip very shortly. Knowing my luck though this will all go Pete Tong.  :D

I for one have followed your thread with a great deal of interest and I really admire what you've achieved and continue to achieve with your car.

I'm not one of those technically minded owners, my '3 is bog standard (although nicely specced), but you're an inspiration mate so keep going and bollox to anyone who questions what you do or how you do it.

You get my vote for sheer commitment.👍👍

Credit to you Shaun for making that statement.

Personally I love these build threads - so much info being shared on what works and don't work in the real world.

I really do hope you keep updating this thread as having seen what the normal BW EFR can do on a S3 engine ur EFR Hybrid is going to be very interesting compared to say the standard Stage 3 upgrade path of a TTE5xx.

It's unfortunate you've felt compelled to have to post that Shaunee, as you've always been transparent and upfront at all times and I have to say it's incredibly interesting and enjoyable to read these detailed developments. Not least because it takes some amount of time to write your posts for our benefit and I really appreciate you taking the time to share everything!

Thank you guys.

I did get some more information from Iain yesterday, as he spent a couple of hours on my car first thing yesterday morning.

More mapping was done yesterday morning, but it's all about ensuring the PID's are all setup at the moment and ECU is controlling as needed.

Yesterday saw 458bhp @ under 1.2bar at 34% throttle opening.

Spool on this new turbo so far has matched what the stock turbo was achieving 1:1.

Still plenty to do though, however this is all good news at this stage.

The anticipated restriction will be exhaust gas flow, due to the OEM exhaust housing and OEM manifold.  This will increase Exhaust Gas Temperatures (EGT's) which will be monitored as part of the tuning.  Increasing EGT's past certain levels isn't great for the engine and/or turbo.  I've seen turbine wheels literally melt when EGT's go through the roof!

The EFR core based on these results so far, suggest it has loads left in it.... but we already knew how good the core can perform (all things being equal).  Unfortunately all things are not equal, so we'll have to see how this pans out.

Don't forget I'm also still on the OEM inlet / intake system for the time being.

Always read with interest and appreciate the effort in documenting your logical and methodical approach with measured results to follow them up with , wether good or bad.

Have you considered water methanol injection for keeping intake temperatures low? I find it helps my car considerably.

I really don't want to use anything like that. I know it provides benefits, but I've never been keen on WMI.

Everything is fine until the pump fails.

Agreed. That's why I:
1. Have a good failsafe mechanism
2. Do not map for WMI. Just use it for lowering temps and helping the engine last longer. So even if the pump does stop and the failsafe fails at the same time, quite unlikely but you never know, I will still not suffer a catastrophic engine failure.

But I do understand your point of view too, each one of us uses what works best for our specific situation and I am very much looking forward to your results!

Got a text message this morning to say that power is now up to 496bhp using full throttle and 1.3bar of boost at peak power.

This is no where finished yet, as Iain said "I haven't started any of the proper tuning yet. Lots to do now."

Again, all going in the right direction with no issues/limits found yet.

When you do a project like that, how many weeks is the car with the tuner?

thanks

This one has been a bit extreme tbh, as I have had to suck up delays with several major items and had to change my approach. Not had this car since May this year.

It's the price you pay when new things are still in development. Should have it back fairly soon now, but that may get delayed if I need to go down the modded inlet route.... which I can see being the case.

I really need it back before end of September so I can test it out down the strip before the season finishes. Then I'll probably throw back for the next load of work to be done.

like so much how you give the information and descriptions about mods.

3 months without the car I would be very stressed :S

thanks again and waiting for more updates

Minor setback.

For some reason spool suddenly got worse on Wednesday, losing 500rpm, and boost control became overall erratic.

It looks like we have a boost leak of some sorts.

Litchfield's haven't had time to investigate at the moment since pulling the car off the dyno on Wednesday.  Hopefully I'll get an update today, and hopefully it has been found that a boost pipe has come off somewhere (easy fix).

This all happened shortly after the full blown Wide Open Throttle (WOT) runs really started, so let's hope it's a loose fitting on one of the boost pipes.

The symptoms are exactly the same as when I had a boost pipe issue late last year, which turned out to be a torn boost pipe (which had rubbed on a pulley).  Fingers crossed it's easy to spot and fix.

It's amazing how much these boost pipes swell when under boost.  Hitting over 500hp means a lot more air is being forced through the pipe work.

That's why I went for a bag of these. So far so good on my 8P. Didn't want to take any chances.

He used to have forge hoses and they split, forge then released a new design to prevent this shortly after I discussed the issue with them

I just remembered that i'm absent minded, wait, i mean i lost my mind i can't find it.

Unfortunately no further investigation has taken place since Wednesday, but I thought I'd post up the last dyno run I was sent early Tuesday prior to the boost issues arising.

Don't read too much into this for peak values or curve shape as it was part of the initial setting up of the map. The mid range needs more work (boost and ignition - hence the low torque) as does the top end. This was on a wide open throttle rpm sweep with 1.3bar at the top end.

Nice to see it still pulling hard to the stock rev limit, which may be extended depending on how the turbo and engine behaves when the wick is turned up.

Still work in progress and they'll be cracking back on with it this coming week.
