Not much that is positive!  :(

Syvecs has been dropped as we found out (last week) it doesn't work with the 8V.  We were assured it would so as you can imagine this has led to extreme frustration.

Such is life and I need to move on.

Car is currently with Litchfield's and the plan is to now press on with the big turbo kit custom pipework fabrication.

I'm hoping to hear some positive news on this, this week.

I really need to get some progress on this now as I'm starting to get in the "danger zone" of frustration.  That has, in the past, led to the car being chopped in for something else.

When doing projects like this you always have ups and downs, so I need to put stuff into context really.

Onward and upward!

Do the big bhp IMS kits use a standalone ECU or OEM to control things?? Sure MoTeC can always be used considering Dave Rowe is running one in his Pikes Peak Quattro with a TTRS 2.5 lump in it.

Standalone ECU afaik.  There's nothing wrong with the stock ECU to be fair, apart from the boost control inadequacies.

I can't be bothered with the ECU change now.... need to press on as I've lost too much time as it is.

Stock at the moment.... will only change as and when I need to, however, I'm already lining up a custom intake pipe to test as part of the turbo kit.

Things haven’t quite panned out as I had envisaged, but that’s always the risk when not going down the “off the shelf” route……

Putting it bluntly there have been some issues with being able to progress with the pre-production big turbo kit.  It has been suggested that the current manifold design may need some alterations made around the collector (which is where the five tubes from each exhaust port meet the turbo exhaust side).  This will take at least 5 weeks to redesign and fabricate.  Due to this, other competing workload and not enough hours in the day, I have been informed that it will be unrealistic to expect any real progress to be made on this until the Autumn.

Believe me, this is disappointing but it is what is it.

So I had a decision to make…… wait until the Autumn to start, and let’s be honest that could drift again, or take a different direction now.  I chose the latter.

I don’t know how this will pan out, but until I try then I won’t know.

I have now decided to have a hybrid turbo created based on the OEM housing and manifold, so I have commissioned Litchfield and Turbo Dynamics to “crack on” with this.

I have done a fair amount of work with both of these companies in the past with hybrid turbos with really good results, so it will be interesting to see how this goes.

Ideally I never wanted to go down this route as this will fall well short of where I wanted the car to be powerwise, however, it’s more about the journey for me than any single result at any single point in time.

In some respects it fits better now into the Staged approach I prefer to take, being more of a Stage 3 conversion utilising the stock turbo frame.

Whilst I fully appreciate this has been done before by others, there are some ideas we’ve discussed to look at trying something slightly different to what is currently available.

I’ll still be keeping one eye on the big turbo development, but I won’t expect to be up and running properly with that until the next drag strip season.  In the meantime I’m hopeful we can make positive progress with a hybrid unit.

I’ll update as soon as I start getting pictures and details back from Litchfield and TD.

In my experience trying something different doesn't always work and keeps costing you over and over again,i found this out when taking my TT to over 500 bhp being a guinea pig for many companies! More hassle than it's worth imo,the most i will take my RS3 is to is using the tried and tested TTe 500 turbo at some point. Fair play to you though and i for one have been enjoying your build thread👍

100%.... no guarantees with anything Caney, but for me that's part of the attraction.

If it doesn't work then I'll have to junk it all and swap the car out! :D

I always go into this with my eyes wide open and life is full of challenge.  It would be boring if it wasn't! :)

I just want to try something else if I can't have the big turbo kit right here and now, but that will come no doubt...... just not today. :(

Enjoying the journey as always Shaun and I've learnt a lot from you as you know. At least now, as you say, this fits in better with the next stage of testing so we can see some good data for a stage 3 and then later on, hopefully, we can see what a bigger turbo can do on this engine.

Good luck

I just remembered that i'm absent minded, wait, i mean i lost my mind i can't find it.

Can you divulge as to which company you're using to develop the bespoke exhaust manifold to fit a large frame turbo??

Can't believe they've "designed" the collector wrong and now needs a redesign, if they're in the business of making manifolds!!!!

Nortech make some very nice manifolds btw - could give them a try!

Nortech are doing the work!

The current version of their kit has been designed on an engine out of the bay. They suspect it may need adjustments when trial fitted insitu, so are just being upfront about the delays and their lack of resource to progress right now.

Nortechs rep on product quality is exceptional, so I'm happy to wait in reality. It's finished when it's finished.

Did you run at Santa Pod yesterday or was it another RS3 with the same colour?

I had a Big Turbo Nortech kit on my Golf 6R. Superb quality. They can be a little slow though

RS3 8V FL - bone stock...for now.
