The demo car we were due to have a go in has been delayed by the factory. Been offered a quick go in the showroom Roadster model instead - so trying to sort that now.

Hi Guys,

So I started out the day wanting to get onto the litchfield dyno but unfortunately Ian had something to do at Silverstone so instead I met up with a few RS3 owners in Manchester and got their verdict on the TTRS as well. By the end of the meet everyone agreed it was a much better car than the RS3 and much quicker also (we didn't get to drag race or race the RS3 against it as it was getting late and I needed to go back to the Midlands).

So let me get the review out of the way.

1. The looks

Now for me, it doesn't actually look that good, but this was just a dealer car and they can't spec anything. It was very basic Daytona grey, no packs and boring alloys. I do however really like the look of the lights.

Inside the cockpit is a completely different story. This is by far the best place I've been in inside a car, the virtual cockpit is brilliant and the new air vents are an innovation to behold! It also has an engine sound button in the middle that you can just press to open up the valves rather than having to cycle through drive select like the RS3

2. The Sound.

This is an interesting area, the TTRS does not go from quiet to loud like the RS3 as it climbs the rev range, it is constantly loud and has the same note all the way through. The noise of the actual engine is far superior sounding but the exhaust note is not as good. It has a deeper growl to it.
You can however hear more of an induction noise which makes the engine sound a lot better.
Launch control sound is far more aggressive, it bounces off the limiter quicker.

3. The Speed

This car is undoubtedly quicker than the RS3, it would completely obliterate it from a standing start and also rolling. On the way to Manchester I had a play with a new m3 and the ttrs was pulling away convincingly, unfortunately the same couldn't be said when I came up against a new gtr rolling (that thing is flipping quick!)
The car is far more engaging and as soon as you drive you feel like it is more raw than the RS3, it just wants you to be in dynamic and go. The is zero lag, the acceleration is brutal.

4. The handling

The car comes equipped with Hancock Evo v2 tyres, I've never used them on a car before but I have to say this car is completely planted. Slow speed and fast bends it is rock solid.
One thing that excited me was that I could drift the car!! It can get sideways very easily, the only thing that stops a power slide is that annoyingly the car will not let you bounce off the limiter in first gear, it will auto up shift to second but then bounce off in every other gear, this is good when launching in first gear but apart from that it spoils the fun.

5. Verdict

On the road base price for this car is 52k vs 40k for the RS3, is it 12k better? No but it is definitely a different kind of beast. Every RS3 owner at the meet said they would definitely have one over the RS3, it's just not family friendly. I'm 6ft 3 and I had loads of space in the car.
This car for me is a proper drivers car compared to the RS3, it's very involving and ticks all the right boxes for me, it is a shame it is labelled as a hair dressers car because it could seriously be special!

Greet review and I agree with everything you've said. Seriously fast and I'm not sure I would pay double the cash for the R8 as having been in both, there isn't much difference!

I thought the TTRS looked ace but it needs a decent colour paint, either Catalunya or Viper Green:)
The Mrs said it was savagely quick, it's just a shame it doesn't pop or bang like the RS3, fingers crossed a decat might be able to resolve that!

Nice report Dan. As I expected from the magazine reviews I have read, it is appreciably faster than the RS3 and a tidier drive.

Nice to hear that the acceleration can be classed as 'savage' haha.

I think the £12k price difference between standard cars is the major stumbling block for it. However, let's wait and see what the FL RS3 prices will be, for sure they will be more than ours... Plus the TTRS will be a very limited car in the UK so this will, of course, offset the initial outlay with future residuals.

Funny you mention the GT-R: met one here in Poland the other day. He went for it, I just did a few pops and bangs. They are crazy quick, but still think the RS3 sounded better... Though I must admit I did not hear him for long as he disappeared!

I thought it was a nicely balanced and honest appraisal from an RS3 owner of the TT RS. I also believe him when he says it is quicker as the TT has always had the edge over the 8V A3 platform in terms of handling set up and adding the new 5 Cylinder to that mix should be interesting. If the claims from some RS3 owners is that the current 5pot does close to 400bhp now, the new one must be well into the 420bhp range. It is a shame that instead of taking part in conversations about the RS3 in a constructive way, any negativity you perceive is met with childish remarks like those above. The RS3 is a very capable car but it is not the be all and end all. Interestingly I had a fully loaded RS3 for the day recently and will be test driving the TT RS this week, so I'm interested to see if I come out of it with the same thoughts as
D19NLB. I'm also glad the majority of owners on this site are not a blinded and biased as you, because otherwise we wouldn't get any honest appraisal at all.

Plus of course, like for like between the 8P and the Mk2 TT, and the 8V and Mk3 TT, the TT is a lighter car. The original TTRS was also faster than the 8P RS3. TT will always have a slightly superior power to weight ratio. Simple science!

But then this is exactly why they are not on sale at the same price, or for the same clients generally. While I would have liked to wait for the TTRS I do need the practicality of the RS3.

Having said that, would I buy a TTRS now I have the RS3? I don't think so. But I would like to have a drive of one for sure...

Well said!
D19NLB took 6+ past and present RS3 8V owners out for a spin and every single one commented on how much faster the TTRS was in comparison with my Mrs describing it as "savage". It was a good meet with some good friendly people, not a keyboard warrior in site:)

"Much faster" total bullshit.

I value the opinion of multiple RS3 owners who have actually driven one vs the opinion of someone who sits at home in front of his PC pretending to be king know it all;)

Well this went from 0-100 real quick...a bit like the TTRS when it leaves the RS3 behind in a drag race!

Anyway, Terminator X aka Public Enemy #1 trying to live up to that name, go and test drive a TTRS and let us know your thoughts before being a keyboard warrior with ZERO experienced opinion to dash the experienced opinion of someone who owns an RS3 and has DRIVEN for 3 DAYS, TTRS.

The TTRS is quicker than the RS3 fact - it has more power/torque from stock anyway so i don't see why you're even trying to argue the toss.

Yet another thread on its way to caos! FFS!

I drove the ttrs and it's quicker than the RS3 hands down! No argument. It might not be nice to hear, but it's fact!

Saying that I'd have my RS3 over a faster ttrs any day. Ours sound better, and practicality wise, there's no contest!

The tt rs is lighter than the RS3 with more power, it would be quicker. Only makes sense.

I had an mk2 tt rs and a friend had an 8p at the time. The TT was a fair whack quicker
