Warped discs = pedal travel = Warped discs, as the disc will be pushing the pads out into the calipers more then the piston seals ordinarily would. Only solution is new/skimmed discs to return them to true again.

I have to say though, my car had the 47i6 upgrade before I bought it. The brakes don't squeak and are phenomenal even at 140mph+, to the point where I can trigger the hazards to come on when braking hard. So it is possible to get them working properly.

(obviously I realise I've jinxed it now, and will be joining the complaints line next week)

47i6 is the Audi reference for the technical service bulletin that relates to the brake update. See the second post in this thread.

Also check the calipers as the new ones should be sporting 2 anti-vibration bobbins:

They are NOT anti-vibration bobbins

Erm I am 100% sure that however hard I stand on my brakes, the hazards do not come on. Should they?

Yes under what would be classed as emergency braking.

I had to hit the brakes the other day to avoid a tractor and ABS kicked in for a long time whilst I tried my best to not get squashed.

No hazards came on.........................

Had it just now - I think it may be triggered when braking very hard and coming to a standstill. Try it on the high-grip surface next time you come up to some red traffic lights, (after checking there isn't anyone behind you!)

Now i'm confused.............

The "Reqill Tuned Absorber" is a resonance damper, It's dampening the vibration level (vs frequency) so "anti vibration" is a correct definition, is it not?

I have now had pads 3x47i6 updates and another set of discs and pads fitted and still have brake squeal. The new brake setup definitely has more pedal travel, less bite, which makes bake modulation more difficult, suffers from overheating and so warp. Is anyone aware of an RS3 that has had ceramics fitted by Audi. I have tried to go down this route in the last 2 or 3 replacement sets and after a lot of consideration they refused as it's not a factory or approved accessory from Audi. I have heard of a couple of RS4's however that have eventually had ceramics fitted to resolve brake issues.

Are Pagid R19's Pagid Blues they were about to be my next option but it sounds like they have the same problems!

Hi Jmcnarnee

The Pagid R19 pads were phenomenal in  every way apart from the fact that they squeal like a pig at low speed. When you read up about it there is sod all you can do about it. That is what they do. It drove me completely nuts after six months.

When the car went in for a separate brake issue Audi replaced everything, calipers, discs and pads so I am back on OEM. You have seen my comments above re: current state of play!

Cheers

Matt

I'd be interested to know what the Audi technician's explanation for the increased pedal travel was, as this is a purely mechanical thing. Assuming the pads have been run in correctly, and if none of the hydraulic side of things has been changed, the extra travel is due solely to the discs not being true and pushing the pads further into the calipers during a wheel rotation. This would suggest that the 'new' discs are either not new, or faulty.

My car went in because the floating discs had physically moved and were rubbing when on full lock. They stripped it all down and Audi replaced everything for new. They told me that the parts were all 'modified parts' so not the same calipers, discs and pads. If they were the same parts I would agree that pedal travel should be the same but is it not possible that whatever has been modified may cause this?

Ceramics were never an option on RS3's whereas they were on B7 and B8 RS4s so as much as they are OEM parts they won't fit them to a car that did not have them as an option because it is a modified caliper carrier you need.

Update on my little trip to Glasgow Audi today, new discs and pads on order - under warranty - to stop all the funny stuff going on at the front end..

Also FYI there was an odd vibration in the engine compartment, drivers side, which I had noted for inspection.

This turned out to be a loose fuel pipe gently bouncing of a panel, most noticeable at idle (for obvious reasons), now tied back and safe. If you hear a vibration which doesn't sound mechanical as in something lunching itself then it could be that.

Nearly finally the paint issue will be reported on later, I'd like to think it's nothing serious but could be a respray job.

Finally - service received was excellent. Next update early November after brakes are done.

I am by no means an expert I say increased pedal travel more to try and describe the sensation from the softer or sponger pedal feel. I doubt in reality the pedal can travel that much further for effective braking maybe the bite is felt later rather than the pedal going further.

Car has been with Audi today the have faulted the brakes again will be speaking to Audi UK tomorrow.

Hi Guys.....
my opinion to the o.e.m. RS3 brakes.....
Forget the new disc pads..... from 47i6
forget the disc.....weve got several threads in our german
RS3 forum ..... its ridicolous... the original parts dont work....

Try an other disc from 3party like brembo or Movit
And get new braking pads from ebc redstuff or yellow stuff
or pagid 4-2-1 withe the original caliper

That will working. No squeezing no other problems....

I had movit discs with pagid for 60000km works fine....

Now ive got the rs5 brakeswith de movit disc....
works up to 300 km/h

Brakes update - shiny new discs, pads and calipers now fitted.

Being very gentle with them and as I have the relative luxury of living in the countryside I can go a long way without stupid people causing me to brake harder than I would wish. So far, a nice pedal feel and no squealing, vibration or helicopter noises.

Again, good service from Glasgow Audi but the A5 2.0 TDi coupe (manual) loaner was truly awful. Not quite loathsome but very close. I must be more forthright and request something interesting next time.
