Had a discussion with Alcon Brakes yesterday.......

They recommend these discs and Either Pagid RS29 pads (though he said these will probably squeal) or Ferodo DS performance which I already know don't squeal............

attachicon.giffile_48_48.jpg

And rears to match........

attachicon.gifgolf-r-vi-rear-brake-discs-alcon-3.jpg

Are you going to fit the RS29?

Yeah of course I'm going to fit the Squealing pad over the non squealing one.

Well you've followed everybody else's advice to the letter so far and you're still not happy...it's not as daft a question as the tone of your reply...

Just price up replacement rotors, the max kits were 343mm and £800 plus vat

AP are £340 for the pair retail

It's not a disc problem you're having though -you just fancy a change?

Rather than stat another thread I thought I'd jump in this one...

Picked up the RS3 last Friday and it's suffers from the usual squeal at low speeds when warm. They're no way near as effective as I'd expect them to be either.. Plus they seem to run very hot even after periods of non hard braking so whether the pads are dragging I don't know.

Having checked the discs and calipers, it looks like it's had the Audi upgrade. The cars still under warranty with Audi and is due a service soon so was after some advice on how to play it with them. Is there a fix Audi can do now I.e. New pad and shim?

Have a read of various threads on here and elsewhere Matt......Some have the update and no bother, others like myself seem plagued by it so much so I've had to source aftermarket pads But I daren't advocate the particular make that don't squeal because I don't have the technical knowledge Sent from my iPhone using Brembo

Yeah I've done a pretty thorough search through the many threads but ultimately there doesn't seem a definitive answer.
It's had the "B" disc and bobbins on the calipers at some point in the past. The trouble is I'm under warranty so can't change the pads, albeit I know a brand I'd like to that I've used in the past, as it'll void the warranty....

Mine were under warranty
Trouble is all Audi dealers will do is change like for like
And my third set squealed 60 miles from home
So a waste of time
Sent from my iPhone using Brembo

Ah ok fair one.
Crazy to think that they can't out it right! I'll push for them to do something when it's in for service and go from there...

My experience would probably lead me towards fitting Ferodo's. What are you running?
I note a lot say EBC red stuff but I've never had great experiences with EBC products TBH...

Several sets of the revised setup won't solve your problem (as I and many others have had) you have in effect answered your own question ... There is no definitive solution. It's a sensitive subject Pagids work well on Loba discs but not OEM, some Ferodo pads don't squeal but may not be suitable for hard use, Redstuff start off promising but EBC pads often disintegrate see earlier in the thread although to be fair to EBC they have said they will send me a new set of Redstuff pads and EBC discs for the failed rear items. Only warranty friendly solution is fitting shims and putting createc behind the pad every 1500 miles and never letting the vehicle near a dealership but that's also less than ideal.

Stainless hoses are giving good pedal feel so far but I still have Redstuff pads bedding on the front so too early to tell, which no doubt will disintegrate at GTI International at the weekend anyway.

Out of interest what's your idea / pad of choice?

Thanks for the detailed response!
Ha yes no doubt your pads will have seen better days but tbh unless you lapping a circuit a decent spec pad should last
My ideal scenario would be to get Audi to renew the setup again so I've got nice new discs to put in some Ferodo DS2500 pads

Surprising but thanks for the tip.
Maybe the set up just doesn't like the harder compound at low speed road use.

Nanyang tyres of Vietnam do a really good 235/35/19 that's certified for UK roads and when I spoke to them it was the most perfect tyre ever, WM Morrisons supermarket also do the correct grade of engine oil for the 2.5 engine and I spoke to them they told me it was suitable.

Ds2500 is a good pad for fast road and comparable to the OEM compound.

here's the kicker it's exactly the same as APF404 compound that's supplied standard in EVERY AP RACING AFTERMARKET BRAKE KIT...the reason .....it's a quiet pad that doesn't squeal and doesn't cause them warranty issues.

I'd probably go as far as saying that it's probably one of the compounds supplied OEM. REG90 approval is only for aftermarket, if the pad has an OEM part number and its part of the homologation it doesn't need REG90 which is why when you buy a GT3RS they are bright yellow RS29s thinly disguised with a Porsche part number, Audi did the same trick with the B5 RS4 they did a competition package of drilled discs and Rs29s

Good choice on the DS2500 come back and let us know how you got on

As posted at the time on I was reluctant to have the 47i6 upgrade on my car as the only issue I'd had with the original brakes was low-speed brake squeal and to my own satisfaction I'd sorted that; and I'd driven a number of 47i6 modified cars and agreed with owners of that: 1) the pedal was softer and/or longer, 2) the initial bite a lot less, and 3) the brake dust more: but I was persuaded by Audi UK and had a free 2nd service to boot.

So I gave the 47i6 setup 1000-miles to settle and then the low speed brake-squeal began and I applied the same resolution and fitted shims and that was sorted, again.

As most will know I've tried a number of alternative pads since but have gone back to the 47i6 arrangement with shims and NO absorbers.

ANYWAY to the point of this post: had a 2012 RS3 in by garage on Saturday last to fit some cat-by-pass pipes and some TLC to the 'ORIGINAL i.e., NOT 47i6' front brake hubs/spiders and, having completed everything was invited by the owner to evaluate: 500-yards and I'm saying these brakes are superb; the pedal was way up on mine, the bite immediate, and from what I could tell the brake dust 20% of the 47i6 arrangement - and all this brought back memories of my own original arrangement.

I have to say that if any 8P RS3 owners out there with original brakes craving for the 47i6 upgrade B E W A R E; the original brakes are, in my view, everyway better!  And that may just be the pad as other than software change to introduce a 'brake-wipe' when the windscreen wipers are activated I can't see any other change but there's a whole lot of difference in the feel.

Original brake pads with a 'flat' back-plate were:

Brembo: 07.8560.78

Audi: 8J0 615 115R (20S)

47i6 brake pads with a sculpted back-plate and maybe softer material are:

Brembo: 07.8560.82 and 07.8560.83 (2-numbers as they're directional)

Audi: 8J0 615 115S (20S) and 8J0 615 116K (20S)

If anyone has a set of the original 8J0 615 115R (20S) items then I'd like 'em so PM me with a price as I'd like to do a back-to-back.

Edit....

Spoke to Andy at Macclesfield Audi

Apparently the 8J0 615 115R isn't the part number.......

Interestingly he did say they have some discontinued stock of pads coming through for the RS3
He is going to ring me back with details once they are confirmed.

If he does get some 8J0615115R then I'll have a set but they need the have that number imprinted as shown here on my successfully applied low-speed anti-squeal resolution:

8J0615115R_zpsu25vsg2q.jpg

Any other number then I'll not be interested and I've already several sets of alternatives.
