Hi guys, I'm new to the forum and just about to push the button on a RS3. This thread has however resulted in me having second thoughts. I currently drive a Golf 7R and the brakes on that is phenomenal.

Over here in South Africa our cars come with a 5year/100k km maintenence plan, so not allowed to fit aftermarket items (like ebc red stuff) otherwise you loose your maintenance plan.

Everything else on the RS is an upgrade vs the golf, but brakes are a big part of the experience...am I shooting myself in the foot by upgrading?

Depends on if you end up with issues with the brakes.

Obviously the RS3 will be better in 'other' areas.....
However only you will know if the RS is going to be better than what you already have.

racingFreak - it really seems to be dependent on your style of driving and how you're using the car.

The standard brakes are actually very good, there is nothing wrong at all with the standard OEM stuff in terms of actual stopping power or capability in road use normally. For the record - I've never once thought the brakes on mine needed to be 'better', but I have experienced minor brake fade in road use.

The problems for people (to my reading anyway) are down to two main topics;

  • In more aggressive road use or on track, the discs are not up to par - the disc design/airflow of the OEM stuff isn't wonderful, and you find one of the front discs will heat considerably higher than the other, which greatly accelerates fade and over time, the hotter disc will warp and/or crack, giving you issues with noise and vibration as a result. This is a design issue on Audi's part, but very few road cars will be able to do track day use on OEM parts without issues and for me at least, an RS3 isn't a track car. It's still an issue that I think needs resolved by Audi, but I don't consider it a deal breaker
  • Brake squeal or noise from the pads - for some people this appears to be a nagging issue, which many have solved through aftermarket pads. I get small amounts of noise with light braking at low speeds sometimes, but it's not all that annoying. My main problem with the pads is that they appear to wear extremely quickly and at the prices Audi charge for them, I would expect them to be a bit better. If they perform noiselessly as well, well that's a bonus...

It's really up to how you drive if you'll see these issues, but even if you do - if you're under a maintenance plan, you may not have to worry so much about replacing some of these parts anyway.

Are you shooting yourself in the foot? I don't think so - there's a lot to like, I would still buy the RS3 over the Golf any day.

Thanks Deepspace, that clears it up for me. Definitely not going to use it for the track, some spirited driving if the opportunity arises yes, but the power will be more for overtaking on long journeys and frustrating the previous generation of sports cars off the line

In that case, you're much like myself and I doubt you'll have too much bother :)

Im thinking about fitting EBC Black Dash discs in combination with EBC Redstuff to the rear.
The OEM discs look pretty nasty by now...

So my Redstuff pads arrived today, will be fitting them towards the end of the week. I have a 4000 mile trip across Europe in a few weeks, which will help bed them in  :D

Also, I'd emailed EBC to ask about the possibility of getting the DP31513C pads except with the female connector described earlier, got a reply to that this afternoon.

The contact there mentioned about trying to source the correct length of the sensor cable - does anyone have this information? I'm presuming it's unchanged.

Cheers

Two pads in my set of 8 have sensors on them, and the cable is about double the length of the replacement A3 wear sensors I got a hold of lol

Neil after looking at the rears I suspect ours are the same as the S3 / Golf R pads....

The outer pad has a 'T' shaped lug and the inner pad has a 'L' shaped lug

ETKA does show this albeit back to front......

You can see this on our cars

EBC don't have stock...

However a seller on eBay seems to stock them item number 291565720665

I've checked ETKA against the S3 and the pads look exactly the same.

Thanks Sean.I nabbed those on ebay.I`m all redded up now. The lack of dust on the fronts is unreal.

Do you get the correct number of pads?  ie 8 pads for the front, or do you need 2 sets of 4?

You can buy them here if DP31513C is infact the correct ones :) decent price beats £400 for OEM

I can confirm, mine were fitted today, all good. You only need one of the sensors, only one side of the RS3 is used instead of both in the Rs4/r8 etc

So, a related aside - Audi Belfast told me the existing pads were pretty much shot and they recommended replacing them immediately, hence why I went to get the redstuff in the first place.
Mechanic today commented they're only half worn, and he wouldn't have taken them off normally.....

On topic, just wearing the new pads in but even now, they're quieter and feel smoother.

£150 inc delivery and duty from Amazon.com.

But the picture of the pad is totaly different then the original pad..... Is that correct?

I want to do both frontbrakes. Do I have to order 4 items? Or 8? Do I get one of 2 pads for this price?

I think it's just the wrong picture, and the pads should come as a pack of 8
