Lower volume at a later stage of the production run helps as well.
Had the choice of a used new shape S3 or a older RS3, maybe a grand or so in it on the asking prices.
Well you can guess which one I went with. The GFV was offered at over £17k on what will be an over 6yr old car. GFV are far more under market value than they used to be hence why I feel the are slowing down nicely and a good time to jump in.
That said even if purchased new their fall has been far slower than the mainstream.

Anyone who thinks the earlier cars can not be worth more than later cars even if they are supposedly worse, only needs to look at the Lotus Exige, early cars with similar mileage command at least £5k more than the series 2, even though the series 2 is a better car to drive, is faster and more comfortable, the reason why is number of cars produced, series 1 602 series 2 ~2500. The Mk1 RS3 I'm sure will be worth more in the long run, how much more is any ones guess and it needs to be a cult car first people really want to own. I personally think the next cars to make this status is going to be a MK1 RS Focus, the MK1 RS Turbo escort is already there..... Both will win as they have much lower number produced than their replacements

Ref "Anyone who thinks the earlier cars can not be worth more than later cars"
Hmmm, so what about my own experience with a 1971 Lotus Elan?
I kept one for 35-years and near 200K miles and when sold it 90% cash-funded my brand new RS3 - and in that same period the Esprit came and went...
Problem with the future is that you'll never know what its like or what will be of value till you get there, for example: In 1972 I could have swapped (at Foley park Motors, Kidderminster) a brand new Lotus Europa Twin Cam for an original Ford GT40, and didn't; what-a-mistaka-ta-make-a - though the GT40 had a flat rear left it was the where-to-put-the-shopping that did it - and the fact that the Lotus Europa Twin Cam was going to be a lot more fun on give-and-take roads...

For what it's worth I agree with the general sentiment that the Mk1 is a keeper and in the long run will be better value than future models. It's the last of a line and in limited supply. Limited and ever decreasing numbers will confirm values better than anything else for those interested.
Coming from a Porsche I understand only too well the hazards of selling what was once considered last year's model at a "reasonable" price, only to see values shooting up past those for new cars! That's life I guess.
Audi have done a good job with the Mk1 RS3 and I'm sure that despite its niggles it will be a close follower of the venerable RS2 in times to come. The Mk2 with an unlimited production number, a higher price and more generic "A3" DNA will never be loved as much.
Nobody ever remembers who came second, in anything.

The B7 RS4 still commands a decent price tag.
E30 M3 are the same all of them are the first of there class and in my opinion will always be wanted therefor will have value it's just Audi that try to convince you on trade in there not as valuable but as soon as your out of the showroom watch them put another 5-10k on it.
Something is always worth what someone is willing to pay
