Despite the frustration over brake issues and the paint that peeled on the bumpers i thought my RS3 was great.

Always gave me a smile, enjoyed the trip to the South of France where it didn't put a foot wrong.

I simply got rid of mine as my head was turned by the RS4 and it suited our family needs better with having more space.

Yes the 3 has its flaws, doesn't every performance car?

I think we need to remember that wherever like minded owners get together we tend to discuss issues we have had rather than telling the internet how fast we've just travelled along our favourite road or did you see the face on that fella when we dusted his (insert car) !

Keep enjoying the RS and keep smiling!    (good thread btw John)

I posted this back in January of this year, and some nine months later it still summarises my thoughts  :)

I have noticed a number of posts in the 'new RS3' thread referring to the absurdity of a £50k hatchback, as a decently specified mk 2 appears likely to cost, and indeed it does seem ludicrous - particularly to the more senior amongst us who remember the very first Golf GTI priced at less than £5k.

However, looking at the issue from a different perspective I thought of the many qualities of the RS3, both 'old' and new

  • Porsche 911 rivalling/beating performance for £20-30k less

  • all weather usability

  • space for 4/5 in reasonable comfort

  • estate car versatility

  • compact, manoeuverable, easy to drive around town and on commute

  • relaxed motorway cruising

  • relatively economical to run, for its performance capabilities

  • well equipped - I can't think of anything missing that I really need

  • reliability

  • build quality

  • residual values

  • discreet appearance unlikely to attract unwelcome attention from society's undesirables and the boys in blue - not sure whether that is two categories or one ;)

It is hard to imagine any other car which offers such a wide range of abilities, at any price. So rather than questioning our sanity in even contemplating spending such a sum of money on a 'mere hatchback', perhaps we should congratulate ourselves upon our good taste, discernment and excellent judgment.

Touch Edit at the top right of the photo it then gives you editing options at the bottom, touch the re-size icon (looks like 2 L's interlocked) then it'll bring up a grid around the photo with Angle numbers under it, you'll notice there is a box with an arrow icon on the bottom left, touch this and you can then rotate the picture thru 90 degs

Loved mine and the way it drove and handled for the weeks I had it on the road....
The cars are superb and do what they are meant to admirably
The cars have niggles, are based on an old platform and have a few problems.... So what, so did all the cars we now look back on with such fondness. Let's face it if your tuning them and driving them hard sh1t will happen
Nearly all the fault posts and complaints are, as said, about the dealers not finding or fixing the problems or members wanting to know if anyone else had experienced the same problem and what was the fix.....answers to the latter often then go back to the dealership nightmare and not the actual fix
Seems to me, as I have mentioned that most of the negativity is about dealers not finding or fixing problems.....they never will or want to so get to those that know and care instead.....yeh you'll shout warranty back at me.....but unless it's massive major failure then every squeak rattle or clunk isn't really their bag or niche or desire to be bothered to fix. I'd not want to have my car sat there for weeks on end to fix problems that could probably be fixed in a day or two at a good independent
I do think that when the warranties have all but expired on the 8Ps like on other car forums then the negativity will subside and all the positive fun stuff will surface more and more and we can sit back and smile at all the 8V faults and dealer issues

There's no way I'd take mine anywhere other than the dealers for unexplained noises yes some of them aren't too great at fault finding, but at the end of the day I've spent too much hard earned cash on this car to not be making use of a warranty.

As far as I'm concerned that's what the warranty is for.

Why spend £££'s paying an independent, when a dealership should fix it without question.

Two possible reasons - firstly for those who are out of warranty, and secondly independents sometimes spot what the 'master techs' miss  :)

But will they and do they ? If the post are anything to go by I'd say not
Yeh major failure they seem to be ok but all I'm hearing is bad reports and as John started the post with a lot of unhappiness
I'm an outsider in some respects and it's what I see from my perspective that's all

It not the car Pat, not by a long chalk

It's the dealership backup that's severely lacking.......

It almost makes a mockery of the warranty.

When I told Macclesfield Audi/UK about what the independent specialist said to look at first, they flatly refused to take on board any third party diagnosis

I was VERY happy with my SQ5, enjoyed the S1 from a driving point of view a bit more but overall slightly less happy with it (no 1 reason, just that it's had to have a few warranty things and maybe a bit less practical, but I made that choice), still certainly overall happy with it.

Bizarrely I LOVE the Mrs new Hyundai i10 - I think it's because I had such low expectations. I wonder if that is some (<note heavy emphasis on some!) of the reason people are seemingly not so happy as you might expect with their Audi's/RS3's - expectations are WAY high and so it's all to easy to find fault, even a minor one stands out.
Also - the internet has a habit of allowing people to vent even over the smallest issue.
Equally if you spend serious money on a top end product I think it's fair to expect it to be of top notch quality - car's are very complex bits of kit so issues are always going to occur at all levels of the market, I prefer to judge manufacturers/dealers on how they deal with the problems rather than the mere presence of them (assuming there isn't a list as long as your exhaust!).
I know some have had quite a few issues in the dealer department, so far mine has served me well...

I suspect on balance most owners are very happy with their Audi/RS3, it's just not very often someone feels the need to write a post just to say that!

Add me to the list of people with zero problems. Breaks have also been perfect and totally faultless, have nothing negative to say about the car at all. Obviously I feel for those that have had issues and it does make nervous reading for current owners. I love the RS3 more now then when I first bought it!

John, I absolutely love my RS3, even with its squealing brakes and poor mpg  ... my heart aches at the thought that my deal will  soon be over and it will most probably have to go back.

That's a fabulous motor car Vito and I'm with P_G in thinking "why not just keep it".   :3:

Exactly, once the warranties are expired I'm sure life will get easier and not overly expensive if the right independent is chosen that that is service driven
They dont want the fault finding warranty work, no dealer does really as I imagine they can only book time to fix and not find a fault under the terms of the warranty with Audi (although this is only an assumption)

I'm loving the fact that my build is an RS3 and not a TT or an R8...." More thing and less bling" (except the bright orange paint and 3 colour interior of course lol)
