The more I read this topic the more I have to wonder what (if anything) my dealer did to my car when it went in for the chain problem back in Feb.

They claimed that they had `rebuilt` the chain system , and indeed the noise didn't come back for about 6 months.

Recently it has come back out of the blue totally sporadic but not as bad as before.

The tech told me that because they were doing the `work` under warranty (extended) it would be sorted properly!

I still cannot believe that a so called top end market high tech company can design and build a car with so many problems!

They probably just put thicker oil in it.You can get your oil analyzed for little cost .It will tell you the viscosity.I did.

In total 9 weeks now off the road.Don`t know yet whether Bolton have taken spanners to my car.Really fed up so phoned Audi UK and they immediately offered me £250 back in either vouchers or bank transfer.Better than nothing I suppose.

The more I hear, the more I will move on my car if it develops anything more than a required service notification. He probably can't take the engine apart as he has not been suitably trained and is incapable of reading a manual :(

Gosh, that looks just like the drive-train internals of an Audi 5-pot engine...

UK road-traffic alerts in the Bolton area as Audi Mastertechs rush toward Bolton to view...

Then traffic jams as they all drive away scratching their heads hoping they never get asked to undertake such a job..........

Half way there mate.
At least they're doing what they said.
Fingers crossed all is perfect when returned, if they get their finger out you'll have it back for the weekend

Just bought a 12 plate RS3 and interested in this link.  I also have a 2006 A4 3.2 with a 118kmiles and it rattles on start up some times.  Some of the A4/S4 forums recommends keeping the oil level on max and it defo makes a difference to the rattle on start up, meaning there is less frequency of rattle start ups, but it doesn't fix it 100%.  It's running on Mobil1 5-30 (changed every 12months doing around 5K/year) and I've topped the RS3 to max with Shell Helix 5-30, as that's what Audi are supplying.  So far no start up rattle, however the start is not consistent, some times it start straight away and other times cranking for a second or more.  I don't mind, it's good fun as it makes a great noise.  Bottomline, is the horrible noise at start up doing any real damage?  From a pure mechanical sympathy view point the noise is horrible on my A4.

The bloody thing will probably go for ever and it goes like a rocket....haha!

It certainly can`t be doing it any good. The first time the Tech at Bolton heard it he yelled to me to "turn it off now."

jwb1380 regarding your inconsistent startup, I found this when coming from my S3
My S3 used to prime the fuel system when you opened the drivers door but the RS3 doesn't do it.
The cure is turn the ignition on and wait the few seconds it takes to prime or if you can hear it wait until it's finished.
They start the same every time when you do this, on,y when cold or sat a few hours though.
I thought something was wrong with mine but "they all do that sir"

Mine used to prime the system when I first bought it
After it went to Stockport for its first brake update and it's first software update the priming stopped.

As Marshy said it'll prime fuel system when you turn ignition on anyway
So best to give it that few secs to do this anyway.

The way I look at it is if it's cranking slightly longer at least oil pressure is building before it fires.
