Hi,
I placed a deposit for a new RS3 ($5000!) about six weeks ago here in Australia. We still know nothing - no pricing, no ETA, no official specs.
The dealer principal at the shop I'm dealing with reckons Audi Australia will have to price and package the RS3 to compete with the A45, which when sold here comes with everything for $82500-ish. We only have three options: black wheels ($500), "performance" suspension ($2990), and the aerodynamic package (another $2990).
I ordered a while with black wheel A45 back in April 2013, and it arrived 11.5 months later in April 2014.
The car is kind of hilarious but I have no real attachment to it... the only thing I'll never get sick of is the sound from the (standard) performance exhaust, even if it does sound a bit manufactured. It's a great car, but unlike my R36 I haven't grown to love it.
I'm really hoping the RS3 comes in a package that's comparable to the A45, and not a "here's a very basic car but everything will cost extra" type deal. We'll see.
That said, I was told that had I ordered an S3 instead, it would probably arrive after the RS3 will. The wait here for an S3 is nearly as long as the wait was for the A45.

I was thinking of an A45..... What you mean by hilarious ? You'd not over recommend it then ??

Blimey......like they say, there's always someone worse off than yourself......I think your it finch !!

The A45 is fast, comfortable, and a hell of a lot of fun. The sound makes me giggle like a kid. It crackles on the overrun, sounds like a gunshot on high throttle up changes, rumbles and farts and pops and cracks all the time. It's fun in tunnels and parking garages, loves the hills (but also adores tyres and 98 octane petrol). The performance exhaust, if it's optional rather than standard, is well worth ordering unless you're going aftermarket.
The only bad thing is the gearbox response, it's often slow on down changes.
That said, perhaps one of the automatic modes would be better. I don't know - I don't use them.
I know I may get burned on this one but one thing I don't get is why are people putting down deposits for a car they know little about? Prices spec all tbc? It's not like they are limited production. I feel like the whole negotiating process goes out the window once the dealer knows you will buy one... Expect to pay full price on everything. I know there must be a slight buzz by being one of the first but that all goes once the first few weeks have passed. Personally I would want the car tried and tested before I dropped my 50k on a car. But each to there own, and genuinely good luck to all of you who will be buying the new RS3, I will at least wait to test drive one first.
"A few weeks" in Europe is more like "many months" here in Australia. Allocation and availability are limited. As an example, we only got 200 of the 6309 BMW 1M coupes made.
I've bought a fair few cars sight unseen: R36, A45, and an Amarok. I should get the Amarok this week. No idea how it drives or even if it will fit in my garage. The others have all been great purchases - I haven't regretted getting in early, and I'd rather have the car earlier than fight the demand once they're widely known about. With enough research, the risks of getting it wrong are largely mitigated.
I'm not a fan of "negotiating" for a car - I just want to buy the damn thing, saving (or not) a couple of thousand dollars isn't a deal breaker.
If I don't like pricing or spec I get my deposit back... but then have no idea what to buy. The new M2 is on the cards, but will probably be a bit too much $$$ for me

Nice one thanks for a great reply.......interesting stuff
I'm running 2 tuned motors at present one eats mIch Pilot cups rears in 4000 miles and the other eats Toyo 888s on the front in 2400 miles and both are mid teens mpg...so I'm not going be upset too much

No worries. As for why I haven't really warmed to the car, well...
... I don't know. Can't put my finger on it. It's fast and has loads of torque on boost, useful, great on 1000km road trips, perfectly comfortable in the city, great at being enthusiastically punted through the Adelaide Hills, fits myself and another person and various equipment for adventures, it's subtle (apart from the noise in manual mode - it's quiet in the automatic "eco" mode but I don't drive it in the auto modes), and is loaded with gadgets.
I don't like the gearbox, the entertainment system aside from the sat-nav is pretty poor (my seven year old R36 with the RNS510 is more intuitive), the dealer's customer service is poor, and there's a bunch of rattles and noises that have mostly been fixed but some still persist. The front passenger seatbelt rattles against the front passenger seat unless the seat is moved waaaay forward or waaaaaaaay back (and it drives me nuts when I forget to adjust it after a passenger has moved it to a realistic seating position!)... I'm sure there are more. Oh, yeah - the petrol tank is tiny. 55 litres or something, and I regularly see double (or more) the quoted consumption figures around town, worse in the hills. I feel as though I'm constantly feeding it.
The biggest reason, though, is that there's no drama. It's fast and so well composed that it doesn't feel fast. You really have to be pushing it, almost dangerously, to make it feel any differently than driving down to the shops. The exhaust note is so so so predictable, it's almost manufactured. I still think the sound is great, but it's almost as though I know exactly when and how to provoke a crackle or a snap or a bang and it's not at all surprising or soulful any more.
First world problems, though. A well optioned A45 is a great little car, and once I put a Willall tune and intake I'll probably fall in love with it. Until then, it's fast and fun but not captivating.

A45AMG on its limits boosting 1.8 Bar also uses an ex Mitsubishi / hyundia motor , Golf 7R mod for mod wipes an A45 out , there again the Golf 7R has 4 revisions of which the turbo has blown in stock form , RS3 on the other hand Motor is strong turbo boosting considerable 1.4 bar making excess of 260kw, money worth spending at this point in time is a good question as so many pros and cons really drives one mad !
Mitsubishi/Mercedes/Hyundai have worked together in the past but the A45 engine certainly isn't an "ex" Mitsubishi/Hyundai engine, much the same way as the RS3 engnie isn't the UR Quattro engine. There may be a shared lineage, but that's it.
A basic MTM software tune takes the 7R to the same stuck figures as the A45 - 265kw, 450nm. A basic Willall Racing tune for the A45 gives it 305kw with 560nm - so like for like, at least with nothing more complicated than a software tune, there's plenty left in the A45 engine. They are claiming 335kw/610nm with a software tune and intake, on E85 fuel. Impressive for $3000.
The A45/CLA45/etc have also had some turbo issues - mine has had to have the turbo checked, but it didn't need to be replaced.
I won't be keeping the RS3 stock for long. There's plenty more left in that engine.
