Well gents sorry for the late response been having a sh1te time at home at the minute

Audi UK have just rang 30 minutes ago and basically told me "no" and they will not be willing to come to some sort of agreement or good will offer - which i was 95% sure they would say that but i had to try with them.

Audi Newcastle rang 10 minutes later. He told me it needs a new prop shaft, diff, fuel tank & heat shield - £3900+vat

Now obviously I've only seen a couple of pictures, but if I were a betting man, I'd put money on Swift suggesting;

- Fuel tank isn't punctured or damaged - fine as it is. Same with heat shield.

- Exhaust has minor damage - fine as it is

- Haldex centre clutch - damage to threads, so send off for helicoil inserts to be fitted

- New prop shaft bolts, recommend uprated ones

- Propshaft needs new coupling, (might not be available separately though)

- Diff - completely unaffected - Audi talking tosh.

All in with labour, £1500 tops.

That's not good news but in fairness that is an excellent price given the diff itself normally costs £3k inc. VAT for parts and fitting ( or so I was told when I had mine replaced). So for another £1680 you are getting a prop shaft, shield and fuel tank plus fitting.

Excellent price in the fantasy land of Audi prices maybe, but not so great in the real world where Audi aren't picking up the bill!

Hi, I've experience in this area. (I'm Penelope's partner). Because the prop shaft is a 'known fault' they can't fob you off.
A remap makes the car move faster in a shorter time but doesn't do anything that affects the prop shaft directly causing fault.
Go back to them, speak to their press office and say you've got a journalist interested in their fob off.
I bought and repaired a Cat D BMW. I took it back for a known fault. They said my warranty was void. I called the press office and told them that the repaired area (front drivers wing) had no bearing on the rest of the car.
They agreed and wrote to the dealer saying the rest of the car was under warranty...
Fight it.
Yours is a known fault. Even if there is small print somewhere saying a remap voids warranty there is probably also small print saying this excludes common recalls and known faults. If it doesn't they still don't have a leg to stand on.

I'm not sure how far the claim that a remap 'doesn't do anything that affects the prop shaft directly causing fault' will go, to be honest. A remap  ultimately increasing the force directly applied to these components. In an isolated case, Audi will simply argue that by increasing the power, you have exceeded the design limits of the component. Something the warranty is pretty black and white about.

But you're right that this isn't an isolated case - there is a history of this component failing on standard cars. In reality though, the most you can hope for is Audi agreeing to pay for the questionable parts as a 'good will gesture', with you picking up the bill for the rest. (and they will insist on changing the other components as part of the deal).

The best result I'll wager is that you end up with a bill of about £3k but with new parts. So still double what I reckon a specialist will cost the job at. Maybe worth a punt if you don't mind hounding Audi UK for a month or so, but personally I'd take it to a specialist and have a chat with them first. I reckon that'd end up with you on the road quicker, less of a dent in your pocket, and a lot more confidence that the problem has fixed properly and permanently.

Have you priced up the parts? Even from TPS they are pretty expensive should you then be fortunate enough to have an independent fit them at a rate per hour of 50% or less than Audi's. I'm not saying their diagnosis is correct because I have experienced Audi's 'replace rather than repair' policy however if all the parts they mention that need to be new are correct then the price is reasonable

I totally agree it's a good price for Audi to do all that work. But I still think it's very expensive, partly due to the 'replace rather then repair' policy like you say, and partly due to inflated labour costs, (which could quite possibly be double that of an independent).

Right gents here is an update.

I got the car back Wednesday from Audi and took it to the garage, they confirmed it did not need a new diff it took them 20 mins to get the snapped bolts out, it did not need an new fuel tank either.

I went to a breakers called Audi VEEDUBS and got a 2012 S3 prop shaft which was very very slightly different and i was told to take them both to a company called commercial propshafts in gateshead and it took them 1hr to repair the original prop using 1 small part off the S3 prop

i know i was very weary of trying this but for what it was saving me it was worth a try.

I took it back to the garage and It took them 2hrs to put it back together and it was perfect so i am back on the road :))

It has cost me

£200 for the S3 propshaft
£40 for the shaft repair
£200 for the 4hrs labour and the bolts to the garage

£440 in total, little bit of a saving from Audi :))

CERTAINLY WILL NOT BE USING THE LAUNCH CONTROL AGAIN
