I completely agree that having your propshaft coupling fail is definitely preferable to the rear diff lunching itself, but I don't think it's by design.
If it were, then all it would take is a spigot protruding from the centre of the Haldex input plate to prevent any serious damage in the event of failure.
The fact that the propshaft is left to flap about, battering anything in its reach, (including the fuel tank), makes me think this isn't the case. Just under-spec'd bolts from the Audi parts bin.
I was about to say all that too Viraje !
Esp the bit about the Haldex input plate thingy !
In most instances the prop shaft is intact and bolts have been sheared. What is your interpretation?
Interesting first post RS3lover. I thought that sheered bolts were the diagnosed failure on Fletch's car?
A question?
Why are people blaming the prop shaft bolts ?
Has the prop shaft actually snapped any bolts ?
Have a good look at these pictures and the link to the TTRS pictures

My point is that the prop shaft hasn't done that damage shown on the picture
That is the rear of the transfer box not the prop shaft side.

Something in there(a gear) has broken locked up the box and then the bolts have snapped / sheared.
Just an opinion

Give the guy a chance lads ,he is referring to a photo which Paul posted and said the source is from the TT forum ,the damage pictured in that particular photo IS NOT TO Fletch's car which might have caused the confusion.
What was Audis diagnosis?
No disrespect intended but I think Paul's post of the TTRS Transferbox picture has thrown things slightly.
As fletch said above, his problem was propshaft bolts as was Jonny C's issue in the pictures posted above by RS3-Kel. But knowing JonnyC and Poverty TTRS's are considerably tuned and that they both love a good launch/track session it's hardly surprising that the bolts can't take the strain, especially if they are the same spec as your bogo stock A* Quattro.
So in actual fact the damage is akin to this then ?
Fletch's transfer box isn't holed at all then is it ?
It must have broken the central location hub/pin then as well as the bolts.

According to Virage's post, who i believe posted pictures on Fletch's behalf, it looks very similar to the image you've just posted up RS3lover:
