Before you worry anymore about how ruined the car is, I'd take it to a reputable independent and get a verdict from them. It's entirely possible that the damage is very superficial, and apart from a new diff coupling, (and uprated bolts), you may just be looking at a bit of cosmetic damage that isn't actually that serious.

Remember that Audi employs "technicians", (mechanics), in its dealerships, not engineers. They're not interested in fixing any damage, they'll just replace any parts that are at all compromised with new to avoid any future issues, (and associated labour costs). It's easy to see how the warranty claim can run into thousands when you're just swapping parts out for new. Personally, I wouldn't place too much value in their judgement.

This is where an independent shines. They're not using a predetermined approach from Audi procedure manual that removes decision making from the hands of the mechanic. They're using experience and skill to decide the best way to fix the problem. I wouldn't be surprised if the whole debacle ends up costing just hundreds, (rather than thousands), and you end up with a car that won't suffer the same problem again.

This my friend is quite possibly the soundest bit of advice I've read on a forum in a long long time. Top drawer.

What was the "official" reason Audi gave for non-warranty??

Guess they "found" the re-map?

I think there's a valuable lesson to be learned from this unforunate  experience that is if you decide to go down the route of upgrading the power of your car {mapping}you need to also upgrade other components that seem to be the weak spot.Thats where forums like this are good as users can gain knowledge and hopefully prevent things like this from happening.

You are right DATYONA-500 and after my experience any of you who have a map i would suggest uprating these bolts asap..!!!

I will find out the part number of the bolts that snapped and let you all know.

I certainly think a group buy on those uprated bolts would be a great idea.

Well done mate good for you ! :11:

Nothing like being prepared!

I already know it's my next car, just need to find the right one, so may as well start getting the parts together ready for D-Day!!

When I hear back (assuming I do) then i'll create a thread and get the names down.  I also said I'll handle 'UK distribution' if it's easier....Once a forum admin, always a forum admin I guess!!!

I seem to remember an upgrade kit been on the APR website. It may have been the USA site for the TTRS. I'll have to try find it again.

Do the guys at Awesome have any info about the uprated bolts?

My stage 2+ S3 is the only car I've ever regretted selling, so I know how much I'm going enjoy the RS3.

I'm in the Reading area buddy.

I can't help but wonder what might break if the bolts don't?

Is it designed to be the weakest link to save something even more expensive?

I can only echo that said already, I would trailer the car to an independent.
They should save you a fortune even if it's only labour. They certainly would have a go at the broken bolts, before replacing the diff.

I'm standard, but have had modified cars in the past.
A responsible tuner should warn the owner of possible issues with tuning.

My tuner advised against modifying my last 8P S3 because the manual clutch did not have the built in capacity that my previous modded 8L S3's had. I was told to allow for a clutch, within 6 months of a remap.
Considering the car had less than 4000 miles, I was never going to fit a clutch, but I appreciated the honest warning.

If these bolts have no adverse effect, then they should be offered as an option with a remap.

If it were by design, I'd expect something to keep the propshaft aligned in the event of bolt failure. A propshaft flapping about under the car could do serious damage to the point of causing total loss of the vehicle - the fuel tank is right there remember - so I suspect they're just a bit marginal on the spec, and increasing the engine's torque just pushes them over the edge.

I think I'm right in assuming that the RS3/TTRS has the highest torque of any car with this Haldex setup, (the Torsen 4wd on bigger Audis will have both larger propshafts and larger diameter couplings so lower stress on the fasteners). So it's likely that this setup is the same across all Haldex quattro models, and just runs out of tensile strength in a mapped car.

If anything, I'd expect the Haldex controller to provide the fail safe by cutting the Haldex clutch.
