Well technically they only refused 'decat pipes' alone they were happy with the full system!

That really just shows how clueless they really are!

TBH they make it all up and depending on who you speak to sometimes depends on what they allow!

Just be carefull to ensure what your buying and also what you declare to the insurer, as the onus is on you to ensure they cover the right thing.

Let me explain, i was considering the half system advertised here;-

http://tsr-performan...-black-ceramic/

Which i thought included the bypass pipes, but after talking to Scorpion, it doesn't. The picture is wrong, and its the same picture on Scorpions website.

So if you read further on the advert, a half system is road legal, as its from the secondary cat back only.

I don't know about Miltek, but it could be the same mistake on theirs, if it was then the insurers would have no problem with it as you wouldn't be removing the secondary Cats.

My caution is make sure you know what you are buying and then also make sure the insurer has the right part covered. Never assume they know what they are doing as usually they don't. If at some point later, push comes to shove, the insurer will find anything they can not to honour a claim, such as incorrectly covered parts.

I'm beginning to sound like a nanny now, but i've heard of it happening many times.

You are right to be cautious,  In fact i'm dreading re-map time when i have to start shopping around for companies that will insure a mapped car.

I am also insured with Admiral and the cat bypass pipes are only 1 of only 2 mods they would insure for me. They classified it under exhaust / manifold modification

TBH I am not getting why any insurance company would not insure this mod but would insure a full system with race cats because none of the aftermarket turbo back systems out there that I know of are type approved and theoretically are illegal. And similalrly so with the cat back systems as they all delete the secondary cats.

Like said above, it all depends on who you get on the day you phone with Admiral, one of the reasons I'll be moving on form them as well as not insuring the car remapped but covered me with the RS4 with a remap, deflapped, non-res cat back. Go figure!

Fully agree Neil which is why I've decided to leave the exhaust well alone!  I'd only be interested in extra power and the figures for Stage II don't justify the cost at all, the pennies I would have spent are now in my GTR shaped piggy bank!

I'm not sure there will ever be a definitive answer to this question!

Well, this morning I rang Admiral, told them about the bypass pipes and the mod is now listed on my policy, I was also told that the part itself is not covered, they would only cover genuine Audi upgrading parts. Basically if in the event of a RSA, the mod DOES NOT jeopardise any claims, I am covered as normal, but if the mod ( in this case the bypass pipes ) is damaged they will only pay for the replacement with an original Audi part.

Cost : There is not a price increase on the policy, but had to pay an administration fee of £17.00

Milltek Cat By-pass pipes fitted.  Ok, but I do not want to get into which is better, Milltek or Scorpion: both are lengths of stainless steel tube with three-pin flanges at one end, period.  However, on the road, it feels as though the car has a new set of lungs - or has just gotten over a bad cold - whichever it's one hell of an improvement: a light pedal and she's away - I/we/BLUEY likes it...  And the exhaust noise is not excessively loud, just a little more throaty.

Cost: £190 delivered.  Value for money (for me) 100%

They both are just bits of metal but obviously the Millteks sound way better than the budget boys Scorpion ones........... :m0168:

It is defiantly one of the best pound for pound mod's i have done to a car to get such a difference in sound!

Its completely OEM until you open up the car or press S !

Whats next then John?   You clearly have the modification bug now ! :camberma:

Nothing in mind Steve, I'm very content with this machine; the wheels and tyres are pure interest to see if I can understand why the UK spec' cars had the smaller front wheels as standard - certainly in 2011/12 the 8.5Js did not appear in the published options list.  As for the by-pass pipes, well that's pure fun having heard both Catnip's and your car meandering around Wales.

PS: my car does not have the "not for road use" labels fitted:  :m0168:
