Probably stating the obvious but - assuming an upcoming haldex fail - you could save a few quid just by getting a new filter and some oil put in before the pump itself goes U/S?

You'll have read elsewhere how much entertainment there is to be had when the haldex goes completely. Given the winter is coming along at some point ( it's pretty much all year round here in Scotland) you really don't want to be trying to put all those angry torques on a wet/slippy road.

ee0ff2f2751443b684bf1eee8da4a9da.jpggave the motor a scan tonight as the traction light seems to be coming on regularly round corners pulling away. As suspected 4WD fault and intermittent open circuit fault, I've had this few times in the past and reset and even Audi didn't see it when they scanned it (even when I left the code present once). So I've reset it again to see how long she lasts for now. I'm waiting till the warranty renewal is due (Nov) so I can remove the excess and get it straight in as at the moment it's £250 for anything so not long to wait.

At what stage does this go into fault continuously? Just open circuit (no intermittent)

Mine was doing it on and off for almost a year Jay before it virtually stayed continuous. It got to the stage where the T/C light was flashing on whilst I was poodling along the motorway at a steady 60 MPH.

Piggin nightmare it was like playing Russian roulette with the accelerator.

Mine must be reaching a year now too. I would get the filter changed but I've just had the Haldex oil done few months back and with the cost of the pump being approx £250 I may just wait till it's sha*ged altogether and get them to stick a new one in. At least I know the tell tail signs now then of when it needs replacing

Think mines on its way out too...intermittent issues with traction control light flashing up too frequently etc

Got one on order and will replace asap

Looks like mine has gone too  .. and only covered 25k miles and no launches and only a few low gear, high speed acceleration runs.

Weird that my VCDS print out is exactly the same as Duke's though :o. Makes me suspicious, unless a (bonkers) standard fault message of course.

36k fluid change service interval is a joke. Can't understand why the filter and oil shouldn't be changed along with everything else at 18k.

Been in touch with http://stores.ebay.co.uk/haldexparts

Very helpful with pump, filter and oil on it's way for £250.

Just done mine. If you have vcds it will make life easier to get the plastic cover off the filter. Run the pump test and tap old pump with hammer to get the bushes to contact and the pressure will ease the plastic cover out.

Question is would you want them to do it? They don't always replace the haldex oil (quite often chuck the old back in) and they do not change the filter which is the main reason they fail.

So even if they do the pump and don't replace the oil and filter you will be looking at another failure pretty quickly.

The filter comes with the pump when new, as its a small strainer on front of it, new haldex units don't have a proper filter as the old one, allso Audi/vw workshop manual (elsa) states that the oil must be replaced

6 Months since I had my pump replaced and now my T/C light has started coming on when just driving down a straight road at a steady speed again.

I haven't got around to doing the filter and oil since the pump was done despite what I said at the time so I am kicking myself for getting my arse into gear.

Just hope the pump isn't stuffed again as I will have to pay for it this time

How many with failed pumps running MPSS and staggered 255/235?

The gen 4 haldex does have a filter. You are quite right there is a strainer on the pump but the gen 4 haldex has another filter too which needs replacing. I've just done mine.

What the manual says and what the clowns at Audi dealers do are two totally different things :)

Can't imagine tyre/wheel size making any difference to failure rates.

How about rather than question the logic, you just post up your set up? Would have been just as fast to post.

Before you ask, I suspect that the difference in rolling circumference was enough for Audi to create RO2 for the staggered set up, so it could be a factor.

We will never know unless owners post their set ups and tyre choices.

Might be a factor it might not. Nobody will ever be able to tell without looking into it.

I was running staggered 235/225 MPSS and had a couple of VCDS scans with haldex faults which I thought would need to be replaced however they cleared and have not returned for approx 4 months. Ive had the haldex serviced since (by Audi) and I've now changed to 235 all round setup again on MPSS but it's too soon to comment on the issue as I've had no issues recently.

Below is the scan reading I was getting...

Mine started failing whilst running 235/225 and continued on and off for about a year during which I changed to 255/225 when the pump was replaced by Audi warranty without oil or filter changed.

Subsequently I am now running 255/235 so I am keen to see if the oil and filter change stop the problem.

I've just bought this so it can be done properly on the next haldex service. If the pump fails permanently they can replace it and do the service/warranty at the same time and I'll tell them to do the filter replacement

Jay I tried to get Audi to do mine when I had it serviced but they refused on the basis I would be supplying what is perceived to be to a non Audi part to the car as they don't list the filter on their parts database.
