Was a great event and I had the pleasure of chatting to the Chief Designer, Stefan for about 30 mins.  I asked him about why they didn't flare the rear arches...

He wanted to, but just the mould alone would have cost EUR 10 million. Yep, because it's the whole rear quarter panel that would require re-designing. In the flesh, the car looks great.  The rear bumper design adds a nice muscular stance to the back end, and is a clever way of compensating for the lack of flared arches.  The rear track is also wider.  The exhausts are massive!  Much bigger than pictures make them appear.

He is also a Clio V6 owner and former Williams owner - the same as myself ;), so we had lots to chat about wide body kits.

My parting shot was I begged him to convince Audi just to go a bit crazy sometimes.  He couldn't agree more and said he is always pushing them.  Fantastic experience.

Stefan was ace. He was happy to spend time talking to enthusiasts a refreshing change from the stuffy suits which technically he wasn't in ;-)

PT3 are the rear arches really no more flared than the S3 8V they certainly seem more flared than the 8P RS3? They must be to officially accommodate the 235 rears? Your spot on with the improvements to the rear this is how the 8P should have been in the first place but at least there are now 8V RS3 specific side skirts too. Probably another factor that creates the illusion of the rear flared arches. They had me anyway.

Stephan also showed me a picture of his Lancia Delta Integrale ace guy.

Hi,
Awesome thread, went to geneva on the 5th fell in love with the car in the flesh! At geneva they dont have nardo grey car which is what i wanted to see, they had a catalunya red, which i think looks more orange than red. Either way the car looks fab. Does anyone know when the books open on this? I got a build slot, thinking i would be able to order up early march but spoke to my contact at Audi he said it might be a couple weeks. Any ideas?

Just spoken to Audi UK and the configurator will be up "in the next few days" as there has been some sort of delay from Germany...

i went to the launch and was very unimpressed that i waited for 45 mins to look at a car under cover - i had to leave to be somewhere else. After finding the manager and complaining because they said i could look at the car from 6pm I was allowed to go and look at it first thing the next morning before it went back to Germany. I can confirm it sounds awesome....flicking the drive select into dynamic the exhaust note changes quite a lot. Not sure it had sports exhaust, couldn't see any buttons elsewhere.

I have a video if i could work out how to upload it....

Grey looks great but i think its a bit of a fashion colour and one of the salesman said the early RS6's in nardo aren't looking so good after 18 months.

When i blipped throttle up to about 2500rpm and lifted off in dynamic mode it cackled on the over-run, sounded great. engine was cold too

Wow that's loud! Must be a sports exhaust on that. Looks like it was about to drive away?

They were just getting it ready to put onto the transporter. I didn't manage to capture it revving up.

I think it must have been sports exhaust as otherwise it wouldn't have changed the note so much on dynamic mode would it?

Would be really interesting to know as they did mention exhaust valves to increase the volume in the standard system. If it sounds that good standard then I need to hear the sports!
It was one of the few options I had ticked as essential in my head, but would be great to save the £ if the standard system is that good.

I think sports exhaust would have had a button somewhere like the f type does

Sports exhaust has black tips. Difficult to tell on the picture...
