Hi Danny,

Pick car up tomorrow, all I know is that its been to a Bentley garage. they say problem has been sorted. Audi are going to give it a road test to see if problems has been sorted. I will ask if it was balanced using a Hunter balancing machine.

Have you had to change tyres at all. I'm on 3rd set and i'm trying to prove it has something to do with the wheel judder. Long shot but worth a try.

Still on the original contis. Let us know if they used one at the Bentley garage.

Danny,

Have car back after having wheels balanced. It was a 'Hunter' machine that was used. The judder is better but I'm not convinced its solved the issue.

Will reserve judgement until I've been able to test properly.

Thanks

When was it vibrating?  any specific speed or scenarios?

Mostly between 75 and 80. A judder through the steering wheel. Always been an issue since I had the car.

A little concerned that all owners may have to have balanced using Hunter machine every time they have new tyres

Audi informed me its £250 a chuck to have balanced at this particular Bentley garage, plus it was with them for nearly a week.

Thanks

Cressa,

If the Hunter hasn't sorted the issue, where do we go from here? Are we seeing a pattern here? Mine is still with Audi and after a week they still can't find why there is steering wheel shake.  They've asked me to go out in a TTRS to see if there is the same issue. Please keep us posted on whether the Hunter has helped.

£250! Audi paid for this? The dealer or Audi direct?

Hi all,

I'm still waiting for my Audi dealer to get in touch (we spoke on Wednesday) with the brake replacement kit from Germany.

It's currently still on back order since 13 Aug.  Just wanted to know from fellow RS3 owners as to how long it took for stock to come in.

Also, if anyone can share the list of items provided would be great (just to make sure Audi isn't skimping).

Thanks!

PS - have a great bank holiday weekend!

Hi,

The Bentley garage did use the Hunter machine. I do actually think the wheel judder has gone. So I'm happy at the minute. It is a concern that a dynamic balance will be required at each change of tyres. The Audi garage (Nottingham) I had work done are looking to buy one of the hunter machines.

I will keep you updated.

Thanks

Bentley dealership do tend to be pricey, they charged me £160 the last time I used them. Fortunately I have a tyre fitter that has the dynamic balancing machine locally and had all 4 wheels done recently which has reduced the amount of weight on each wheel down to sub 40g except the one I have had straightened because it had a flat spot in it. As much as the wheel is now round the tyre itself is mishapen as it has been run on a mishapen wheel but the machine identified the issue, recommended rotating the tyre a half turn around the rim and then rebalanced and it has worked. I now no longer have any vibration issues front or rear and all for £40 all in.

The Hunter dynamic balancer will not be able to fully counteract flat spots or mishapen wheels which at 75-80 mph, between that and improperly balanced wheels tend to be 99% of the issues causing vibrations at those speeds.

So are you saying your better off just having them balanced rather than the Hunter machine?

Pleased to hear that both of you have cured it by having the balance done!

Well over a month.. must be a good number of RS3 owners replacing their brakes.

Having some rattle issues with my dash.. will have that examined too...

Then let the mods begin...

Hunter is just a Brand name who make different  types of wheel balancers ,the Bentley garage has obviously used one of the many 'Hunter' wheel balancers of which several do the Dynamic balance.Ive had my front wheels dynamically balanced at a local branch of HiQ tyres and are perfect at a cost of £6 per wheel.

This is what I was hoping to avoid, I want it done properly first time.

Hunter do different balancing machines but the dynamic balancer is the best for the extra £5 per wheel it cost. A normal balancer would never have compensated for the tyre irregularities or if it did, you would have 80+g's of weights on the wheels to do so.

Dynamically balanced is when the weight is split between inside and outside edge and not just in one place and can be done on most machines ,the machine in the video is a road force balancer which takes it to another level.

Its official title for the GSP 9700 is dynamically rolling road balanced which is whatI was referring to. It shouldn't take any more than an hour. I had two guys on mine, one doing the balancing and one taking off / putting the wheels back on and it took them 40 minutes for £40.
