Vibration with wheel spacers

Well I’ve toyed with the idea of fitting wheel spacers on my pfl.
So I eventually ordered a pair of h&r 1655573 hubcentric wheel spacers.
I figured 8mm would be enough for me and after fitting them to the front I was happy with the stance.
I had ordered 10 new 35mm h&r wheel bolts.
I have a vibration that comes in about 85mph and is pretty noticeable when near 100.
The only thing I can think could cause it is the wheel bolts, my original bolts have a floating radius washer but the replacement ones are just a fixed seat.
Would anyone have any input or suggestions on this?
I’ve now found h&r wheel bolts with the floating washer which are 39mm and says for Audi S5.
Any help would be welcome, here’s a pic showing an original bolt and an h&r replacement.

Your problem is balance somewhere.

It could be anything - have you lost a weight during the change, is your locking bolt now too light against the others? I guess it could be a spacer out of balance, but highly unlikely. If you are not using locking bolts and all five are the same, then ones with floating washers will not do it I do not think. Check that there is not any crud behind the spacer as it could be a wheel is ever so slightly out of true.

Before you go down the road of chasnging bolts, pop it back to standard so that you can rule out loss of a weight.

I have removed them and tried it and the car is silky smooth again!
When I tried them I had only done the front axle but used 10 of the h&r bolts so no locking wheel bolt was used.
I know others run spacers without problem.

  • LocationUsually in the dyno cell
Check the thickness of the spacers at different points. Maybe they aren`t truly flat.

So we don’t think it will be bolts?
I’ll check the thickness tomorrow, I’ve also emailed h&r to see which bolts they suggest.

I’d be very surprised if it was an H&R spacer that isn’t true or balanced. Have you tried the H&R bolts without spacers?

Have H&R 8mm on mine, can say I’ve never had vibration.

Bought as a pack with longer bolts & locker from CM Wheels.

I did scrub the hubs down before fitting to make sure they sat perfect with no run out.

Did your original studs have a floating washer like in my pic?
What did the replacement have?
Also are your spacers 1655573 Sean?

You are making too much on the floating washer. This is only an upmarket design to allow for any machining tolerances of the wheel seats.

If all five bolts are the same, then no balance issue.

OK, you have taken it back to standard and all is good again - then it is spacer or an odd bolt.

1. Get your kitchen scales out and weigh each bolt.

2. Check the spacer thoroughly for some embedded grit or a high spot on it. Check that the distance of the hole to edge of spacer is same for all five - or to be pedantic, measure the radius is uniform for the spacer inner edge, hole centres and spacer outer edge

You could already have a slight vibration but it’s barely noticeable.

One you move the wheels out by 8mm a side the ‘hardly noticeable’ issue becomes an ‘issue’ because the wheel is now effectively spinning on an extended centre axis and the issue is being amplified.

I had read somewhere to balance the wheel with the spacer fitted.
Anyone heard of this?

This is only to counteract any imbalance without the spacers. As T800 said earlier, a spacer will compound anything small into something larger. But this should not be your case as you say the car was silky smooth without the spacer. BUT, up to what speed was it silky smooth - a small imbalance without the spacer will not necessarily appear at the same speed with a spacer.
