You are right  on what you are saying P G, otherwise what's the point in having the disc if, as they said to me, they update it them self, doesn't make sense !! Anyhow next time I am at the dealers I am gonna ask them again.

Mr. Audi, are they OEM discs or copies? If the latter beware as copied discs have a nasty tendency of destroying the reading laser prematurley and that is a whole new laser unit or worse still RNS-E unit that you won't get on warranty.

I think this is more urban myth than fact. A laser is a non contact device emitting light and reading the information coming back. I don't know how this could be damaged by the disc thats in?

Also remeber the player is there for music as well as sat nav and so they have to expect people to use any old disc with music recorded on.

Current car: Tesla M3 Performance.

“Lightning" 2012 RS3, Ibis White (Sold).  “Bumblebee” 2018 S1 Competition, Vegas Yellow (Sold).  2020 TTRS mk3 Sport Edition (Sold).

It's unfortunately not a myth as I had this on my RS4 but managed to replace the laser unit. It is the heat generated (which is more than generated reading OEM discs) by reading a copied disc that damages the laser unit prematurely

I wondered how it could damage it when its a non contact device,  But that explains it..... Or explains it enough for a technophobe like me!

Gent they are copies, from what i have seen so far its just a maps update BUT if i find anything else i'll let you know.

1 thing i do find strange is after i thought about it i cant play a cd and use the nav unlike my sister can in her A6 as her nav software is on a sd-card, i must try see if it will read it from an sd card,

Also i tried a dvd movie in it the other day to see if it worked as it has the DVD symbol on it BUT unfortunately it DIDN't work

My car came with 2012 disc's, i have since sourced a 2013 disc with Speed cams on.

Did you get the 2013 disc from Audi or a third party? I'd really like a disc with 'safety' cameras on it.

I would rather they fix the bl**dy postcode from German back to UK! I did ask if this was fixed on the new DVD Sat Nav which is fitted to the S3, which is available for the rest of the A3 range in November. All, I got was the horrendous price to replace the whole unit... Something like £5,0000. Just to fix the sodding Postcode issue, then you have to specify that you want the UK Postcode and not the Germany Postcode....
I mean, who in the UK wants a Sat Nav with a Postcode System from another country.

I know, why don't I buy an American car whose Sat Nav is stuck in the US format, and doesn't all it to be altered..... WTF King use is that?

Do you mean the fact it only accepts the first 5 characters, or something else?

Yes that is right. I asked if there was a firmware fix at my local Audi or if the 2013/2014 DVD which fix this but I was told it would only update the maps.

That's just old programming, I'm afraid. I guess a firmware update could fix it, but Audi would rather you just bought a more modern system (as you heard!).

That appears to be a misconception as well as even the MMI 3D system on most modern Audi is only 5 digits for the postcode search. Truth is Audi won't pay the license fee for a full UK seven digit search option. And you can't retrofit MMI into an 8P car because the tech doesn't communicate with each other.

Newer MMI cars all have full postcode option, the systems are very good I must say. Sat in a new S3 yesterday and I was impressed by the new tech, including the MMI touch pad where you can write the letters of the destination you want and it inputs it for you. Makes the RNS-E look ancient (which I suppose it is in fairness).

What was your impression of the car in general? Did you consider taking a test drive?

I suspect that is re-routing due to traffic information. It's not as good as TomTom but knows about the worst stuff.
