Hi,

people i have 2 questions that i would like to be enlightened on,

1. where can i find out which software version my sat nav is using, but i dont even know what model it is, its on a sept 2012 RS3 and says Audi Navigation Plus on the bottom edge of the screen and the screen folds down to reveal the cd slit and 2 SD card slots.

2. how would i upgrade it as the maps must be stored on an internal memory as theres no dvd or SD card in the machine and the sat nav works fine

many thanks in advance.

I guess we are talking of the "big" Sta-NAV CALLED RNS-E, right?

Well, there is an engineering mode for that, that's where you can (among other) find out about the installed version.

Check this out:

I'm confused, i thought the DVD had to be in for the Nav to work?

My car came with 2012 disc's, i have since sourced a 2013 disc with Speed cams on.

You 've lost me as well MrAudi , for the Sat Nav to work you HAVE to insert the DVD, which I got when I bought the car bran new, alongside with a second DVD for Eastern Europe Maps.  :89:

Saying that, the drive of my Sat Nav will not eject the DVD for some reason !!

Sounds like it is locked Vito. Dealer will easily unlock it for you.

For the OP's question and I'll have to check this for sure when I get back to the UK but I seem to recall you can see what firmware version the RNS-E has by pressing 'setup'. Maps are stored on the DVD as said above and the 2012 maps are as detailed as they get for the RNS-E unit. 2013 RNS-E DVD's will update the information on the maps but the graphics etc will probably not change.

That's correct. I had 3 cars sofar, where the dealer simply forgot to undlock the SatNav when delivering the car.
You need VAGcom (VCDS) to do this.

....and yes, you need the DVD in place to be able to navigate using the SatNav.
Did you guys hat to pay for the DVDs (2 discs - western Europe and eastern Europe) extra?
In Germany it came along with the car, I didn't pay anything extra!

...

...

I did overlooked that one - if you this own the large SatNav (RNS-E)
DSCN3847.jpg
there is a DVD inside and it is not transferable to a SD or harddrive...

Mr Audi, i checked today and most definately you have to have the DVD in the drive for the Nav system to work. There is no way to transfer the info onto a SD card or an internal HD etc.

Have you tried to insert any DVD into the machine as you will probably find it won't go in as there is already one in?

Concerning the locked drive: I already had to unlock 2 or 3 SatNavs (actually this model is called RNS-E; abbr. for Radio Sat Nav-Extended) on RS3s as the dealer had simply forgot to unlock it bevor handig out the car.
When they are shipped, Audi always locks the RNS-Es, so the DVDs don't get stolen during shipping or late in the dealers showrooms.
Just go visit your dealer, it's a 5 minute issue ot have it unlocked via VAGcomm (VCDS).

I'm not sure which version my DVDs have, but it's not worth looking as mine are from 2011. but I believe yours will either also be 2011 or in max 2012.

I don't see the point of having it unlocked, when I bought the car I asked the sales assistant if in the future I needed to buy some new DVD's to keep the Sat Nav updated, and they said that I don't need to do anything because the Sat Nav gets updated everytime you take the car in for service.

Vito, they may update the firmware, but i doubt they will update the maps, they sell them for a large sum of money!

No i was doubting they will give you them for free on a service they they sell them for a fortune. I would guess they may update the firmware on the service if its required.

As for copying, you may just be wrong on that!

Vito, they update the maps each year so sell the discs at £140+. Because the maps are on the discs, they cannot be updated by any software flash at service time because the RNS-E never stores the map information. Up to you how often you update your discs but I used to do it ever couple of years,. When the 2nd Tyne tunnel was opened I spend a year driving through the river Tyne according to my RNS-E and the Wetherby to Ferrybridge A1 section looked like I was driving off road!
