Kibber, you have just stated exactly the scenario, i.e. for those with a MkI RS3 who would likely get £25-30k trade in is the Mk II worth investing another £20k+ into when you factor in options and interest if financing the car. Is it £20K+ better, not £20k+ newer.
I suspect most Mk I owners would hope that it is a step change forward not only in how 'fresh' it looks but importantly how it drives, handles and performs overall. If it is the same or worse still, lesser of a performance car than the Mk I why then sink that extra money into a car that is not better? Personally there is a certain value to be spent on having a newer car with warranty but not £20K so it has to perform better otherwise stick with what I have until the cost differential means it is worth making the trade.
Put it this way, if you had two identical cars in terms of performance, handling, presence and feel good factor but one was newer than the other is that worth £20k+ to you to have the newer one? If it is then that is your prerogative; me personally I have better things to do with £20K than go for the latest shiniest thing. If the 8v rides better, stops better, sounds better and performs better overall whilst being fresher then for me it may be worth trading up. If it were the same but fresher and only £10k difference then I would probably still consider trading but £20K is nearly double the price of what I have on my driveway and I can't rationalise that even if the payments are the same and the residual after 4 years is marginally better as I'm getting myself into another 2 years of debt for what? For a quarter of that outlay I could take my Mk I, put Bilsteins on it and a TTE500 and then have a car that would far outperform an 8V albeit it is now not OEM.
I am not slating the 8V at all and I hope it is a better car then the 8P and it should be however just working on paper alone since none of us have driven the car it isn't for me given its price point, depreciation etc. It will for me have to eliminate all the niggles the 8P has and drive better overall to make it worthwhile as I am clearly not fortunate enough just to throw a whole heap of cash at it to be the same but with a newer shape / registration plate on it.
