Ive had a couple of Haldex oil changes, one at 18k and another at 45k. Since the last change which was around 4k miles ago I seem to have developed a whine from somewhere in the drivetrain, I first thought wheel bearing(s) but it does sound like it's coming more from the rear of the car, specifically around 40 to 55mph on and off the power? On another thread/forum somebody reported they had their Haldex serviced but the garage forgot to refill the diff, on the 8v is the Haldex and rear diff two different refills?

Are the Haldex/rear diffs on the 8v prone to failure or is it more likely to be wheel bearing or something else which has a more common drive problem?

A wheel bearing won`t change note with power on / off.It would get worse with speed.Sounds more like the rear diff.

Ok thanks, the noise is there all the time around 40 to 50mph regardless of throttle or free wheeling.

Sorry I misread that. I thought it changed with power on/off. It`s easy to find the noise. Put the car on 4 axle stands
start the engine put in D and put a screwdriver on the rear hubs and the diff. You`ll hear straightaway where the
noise is coming from.

Ok great, what does the Screwdriver tell you? Do you feel a vibration? It's going into AwesomeGTI on Friday so we'll get it up in the air to do some further diagnostics then.

You put your ear to it.
Any untoward noise will be amplified and easier to hear.

Think of it like a record stylus.

Probably only noticeable at speeds 33 and 45 though

Just to give everyone an update, we have found where the whine is coming from. AwesomeGTI got the car up in the air and with someone in the car running the drive. We discovered an oil leak on the front diff/transfer and it sounds like it has run dry! Nasty sound, I’ll post a video at some point. After they looked the part up they found the its been superseded? I’ve tried looking for other posts on this as this is not the right post for people to check on this problem in future, has anyone experienced similar issues. It’s booked into Audi on Tuesday as it’s still under warranty, thank god. Part is £2k alone

Car is a 2016 model which I’ve had from new, 49k miles with extensive servicing at Awesome.
