I have noticed recently that the black coating/paint on the black tips of the performance exhaust has began to fail. Mainly on the inner edge but with most things this is likely to get worse.

Has anyone else had this issue?

I spoke with my local Audi centre who simply quoted what appeared to be some nonsense to then say that no exhaust tip has or will be covered by Audi and it has been this way since around 2015.

The car is a facelift RS3 with performance exhaust.

Lots complaining about this on the other forum.......

Haven't noticed anything yet on mine although the back box was replaced in February so early days yet.

Seems to be common from just a quick search this morning.

Was your exhaust replaced due to the finish on the tips failing?

Its the inner edge of the tips on mine that has began to fail. Less than 1400 miles it lasted which is find unacceptable as i'm sure most will.

The black tailpipe surrounds started to become pitted and then rusty after only 1000miles on my f.l RS3, the rear brake rotors were already rusting when we picked the car up when new and are now really rusty, the panoramic sunroof creaks over the slightest rough road surface and the exhaust rattles like mad on startup.

All of these were mentioned to my local Audi dealer and nothing was done about any of the problems and according to the technician they all suffer from the cold start rattle because “that’s just what they sound like”.

He said that they wouldn’t do anything about the tailpipes or the brakes rusting because that’s just “wear and tear” and the roof wasn’t even looked at, if this is the customer service when buying a ‘premium’ brand then I’d hate to think what cheaper car dealerships are like

Rear hubs can be masked up and sprayed with anti rust silver paint.

Start up Rattle, ignition on select dynamic then start engine = no rattle.

That’s my job for today, masking up and painting. I’m not being funny but I am disabled and I spent a huge amount of money on this car when I bought it so why should I have to paint them myself? If I wanted to buy a ‘project’ I’d of bought a secondhand car and spent some time tarting it up, I shouldn’t have to mess around with a brand new car when for an extra couple of Euro Audi could’ve asked for their brake rotors to be powder coated by the supplier

I agree 100% with your comments.

I’m more a preventative type of owner.

It’s a sad situation that it happens and I just do it for my piece of mind.

I could rant at Audi like some do but I’m afraid that gets no where as once the car leaves the showroom there is little to zero interest from them.

According to both glasgow Audi and Audi uk the exhaust/tailpipes are not covered by warranty.

I will continue to hassle them.

Absolutely do, this is ridiculous and it should be covered. As others here have said they are using chrome tips and overpainting with black. Not a suitable method by any stretch of the imagination. When I take delivery of mine I intend looking at this closely along with the exhaust rattle!!

Audi uk have confirmed that the exhaust tips are not covered under warranty. Classed as a trim item which falls outside the warranty.

So as things stand, the Audi dealership, Audi uk and Audi factory have all confirmed that the tips are not covered by warranty which means i have a rather lovely car with corroded exhaust tips.

Rather annoyed and now have to decide on how to proceed with regards to removing the tips and replacing with non standard tips. I did also ask if i replaced the tips with non Audi items how that would effect the warranty, not a single clear answer was given to me. I have the general feeling that the Audi warranty in nonsense and really hope the car does not suffer any further issues.

If I where you I’d get them re-coated by a specialist if it really bothers you.

Yes you may have to drop that section of the exhaust to get it done
But look at this way, once it’s done properly you should have no more issues.
Your wasting your time with Audi UK.

Re coating is the simplest option.

Audi on this occasion have been utterly useless. Very disappointed.

A trim item... what a joke! So they are classing the back box, valves, tips etc all as a piece of trim? As they are all welded, it’s not like they can be easily removed by themselves

Any excuse to avoid repairing a faulty/defective part.

Talking to anyone associated with Audi during this process has been a total waste of time.

Do the trims come off easy, because I’m thinking gloss powder coating would be best?
