Hey Guys.

Back when I installed a downpipe I had to custom fabricate it due to the car being so new. Nothing was available.

Although I’m happy with the sound and tune results my car come back with this annoying ticking noise under load from around 1500 - 2800 rpm. On idle and high Rev it disappears. It’s definitely not the exhaust valves as it sounds like it comes from under the drives side mid way up the car. In car parks and traffic it’s loud.

Any clues to what this might be?

Thanks
Ron

Ron.

It happens once you decat the down pipe as mine does it on my 8P.

Also check the heat shield isn't touching the down pipe.

Nothing to worry about mate.

Sounds like it's similar to @billymc92 car as he said after a Downpipe and remap his was making a bizarre noise too.

I think he posted a video clip of it too.

I winder if this happens on the big turbo conversions as well and if it can either be mapped out or a slightly different downpipe would change anything. I had an Escort RS Turbo with a race exhaust which had the worse drone ever and we experimented with the distance on the silencers and their lengths until finally getting a great sound and no drone. I know that's not easy on such an expensive exhaust but I am sure something out there could be different.

I have this too I've noticed. Originally the ticking was just on cold start but now it's apparent in comfort. Goes away or seems to in dynamic with valves fully open. Not sure if that's because it's louder. I would expect if it was coming from the car it would be louder with valves open because the noise would travel further without blocking it?
Billymc has a miltek back box on route so he is going to see if it goes away With that. It does appear to just be the exact same cold start noise we know about but all the time since downpipe fitted. I had a custom one too but billymc has a miltek so it can't be that either. I'm thinking the noise is always there it's just exaggerated with no cat in the way. I'm thrown towards it being the back box or valves as it just seems that way from the messing I've done with mine today.

Yup exactly same as mine bud. I’ve got videos up on the forum and on YouTube. Could get you the links if you want to listen. No idea why it does it but seems it has happened to several people once they have got decat. Hopefully the new backbox stops it

I will be interested to see what the new back box does Billy. Does it still allow you to change the sound or is it something different like a non valve type?

The milltek exhaust is also valved. Uses OEM valves. I love having a loud car but sometimes you just need the comfort sound so it was a must for me

If it uses OEM valves does that mean it will have the same rattle on start up?

I don’t have the start up rattle. MRC must have mapped it out.

The start up rattle is nothing to do with exhaust flaps.

It’s officially from Audi “Advanced Catalyst Cold start phase”

I disconnected the flaps so they were open all the time the noise was still there albeit even louder because they were open.

I activated both flaps with VCP and yes the noise was still there.

The only way to get the car to start without the noise is to put it in Dynamic from the get go or just after firing it up.

T-800 - that reply sucks and I can’t understand how some owners get it and some don’t if it’s not a problem. Also why some get it all the time and can also hear it in dynamic?
More proof it’s rubbish is the fact I did not have the start up noise in any mode until I had covered 450 miles and yes on your previous advice I scroll to dynamic before starting each day.

Billy - could you ask MCS if they did map it out for definate please. I have tried phoning them 3 different times to ask about maps but have so far always gone to answerphone.

If you didn’t like that then you certainly won’t like the follow up.

This was their reply to me asking for an explanation of why when the car is started in Dynamic or pulled back into S in any mode the noise stops........

Looks like I scared em off.

But why would they TX?

People have already bought them worldwide......

It’s not as if we are all down at Audi MK with pitchforks and an angry mob.

Dealers say it’s normal

Audi say it’s normal

People could vote with their feet, but where would we go ? What could be bought at the same price point with similar characteristics ?

A Benz / BMW maybe........ it’s debatable whether they are any better and the same of their Customer service back up.

It’s the same old poppycock.....sell something then shut yer ears once the customer who only quotes forum gossip comes back with a reasonable question that no one can answer.

I thought there is supposed to be a TPI or something for the exhaust and some people have had them exchanged? I wonder if you got the rattle constantly you would have grounds to change it for an aftermarket one?

I’m still interested to hear if MCS did map out the noise and could they do that on standard cars without a remap. If the rattle was bad it would be hard for Audi to invalidate your warranty if they had ample opportunity to fix it and you eventually went elsewhere for a fix which didn’t change any performance related settings. Just a thought.

SCS ? DFS ?  :m0168:

There is a TPI for Rattling exhaust flaps as per the video clip from Audi i posted.......

This is NOTHING to do with the start up rattle of the new DAZA engine car, that's a catalyst warm up phase, there isn't a TPI for it, because Audi (see above official email) say it's a production standard for the new RS3..........

However if your flaps rattle and you can stop them like in the video clip, with either a screwdriver or by putting your finger on the pivot point, then yes Audi will more than likely 1) Replace rear section 2) Fob you off...... :boxing:

MRC don't map out the strat up noise - they advised me that their map reduces start up revs which has effect of "lessening the rattle"
