Hi All,

I would recommend JACKSONS FORD for HUNTER ROAD FORCE BALANCING. They are a nice family run business (listed on the balance my car website). They're just off the M40 in Henley in Arden so nice and centrally located.

Ask for Dan Jackson (brother of Mat Jackson - TOURING cars driver) he really knows what he's talking about and has a skilled workshop guy on the Hunter equipment (unlike another Garage with Hunter road force kit I tried previously).

I had tried unsuccessfully to sort out vib issue with normal balancing and actually COSTCO Derby had done a good job on a conventional machine - I asked them to try to get to zero imbalance and they had achieved it, but the vib was not solved.

I took the car in and the initial results for the front wheels & tyres were:

NSF inner 0g imbalance, outer 0g imbalance but high RFV (radial force variation) of 100N

OSF inner 0g imbalance, outer 0g imbalance and even higher RFV of 115N

Wheel lateral and radial runout was measured and wheels were good (they should be as only approx 1000 miles old)

Dan Jackson said it was the first time he'd had a car in with 0g imbalance on both wheels/tyres on the initial measurment, but the RFV was marginal and mainly coming from the tyres. They remounted the tyres (MPSS) to reduce the RFV by carefully 'timing' the tyres to the wheels.

Result was NSF 0g imbalance inner & outer but RFV reduced to 20N, and OSF 0g imbalance but RFV down to 10N (zero RFV would be perfect but in practice would never be achieved as it depends so much on the tyre radial stiffness).

Hey presto - vibration solved :) , so my issue was not balance as even with 0g imbalance the vib was there when I took the car in, it was high RFV that was causing the vibration !  (Dan thought that the tyres may not have been seated too well on the wheels when they were fitted as normally MPSS are good tyres)

Quoted cost was £30-£50 per wheel depending on level of stripdown and adjustment required. Its the best £90 I've spent this year as the vib was driving me nuts!

If you go, mention the RS3 Forum  - I told him I'd say what a great job they'd done :D

Hi Roy G,

I was thinking about turning up 'on the day', but the weather forecast is looking pretty poor, so I'm holding out to see how wet it is tomorrow.

A few showers are not problem and I'll be there, but if its raining cats and dogs I'll give it a miss.

Cheers

Caveman.

Cavey you going tomorrow ?

Hi SapsRS3,

Just a note, you'll probably need to ring them first to book a slot.

It was quite good for me, I rang up last wednesday and they did it on friday morning. For my car it took about 2 hours for both front wheels.

Regards,

Caveman.

Finally got round to booking my car in with Jackson's for a couple of weeks time...they did a price match on 4 MPSS's too!

Spoke to Dan who was very helpful and is confident he should be able to sort the vibration issues out so fingers crossed!

New member here but just to add my info.

Bought my 2012 RS3 from Crewe Audi - 4 months old and 4k on the clock. Always had slight judder at 80 ish speed. Noticed that one of the alloys (front near side) had been reworked so figured that it had taken a knock

Tried wheel alignment - no change

Bought new tyres all round - no change

So earlier this week replaced the OEM alloys with Oz racing Superturismo LM's (black like the car) - look superb BUT still got the wheel shake at 80 ish. Hence for what it is worth -

1) not the brakes as I have had the recall works/new brakes etc

2) not the wheel alignmenf as had it checked a few times

3) not the OEM alloys (although not saying that others may have 'soft' alloys and distortion due to pot holes etc)

This therefore only leaves me to try having the wheels balanced on the Hunter to see if the whole issue is due to the suspension/low profile tyre mix being very sensitive to road conditions and the tyres being perfectly balanced?

Nearest is apparently Boston so will call Viv to log the issue but will try at some point to get the tyres balanced and take it from there.

You're right, they are very sensitive. Example; I had brakes and pads replaced week before last and when driving on motorway I wondered what Audi had done to my wheels as they has vibration in them at all sorts of legal speeds.

Took them off last weekend to reseal the disc carriers and calipers, cleaned up the wheels, put them on again with a good bang with the hand on the edges to ensure the wheel faced up to the hub properly, torqued up and all with tyres inflated just so and this week the car drives like a dream with no vibration.

Today I was at Jacksons Ford having 4 wheel alignment and 4 tyres fitted/balanced ,Dan matched Black Circles prices and  performed a first class job using the hunter equipment.I dropped the car off  walked around the corner to a cafe and had full english breakfast and returned to Jacksons reception where i was able to view on a large screen telly them finishing off the work on my car.I cannot fault their service / price match and highly  recommend them. :)

Nice one Daytona,

I'm glad you were happy with the job that they did.

Its the most professional garage I've been to for tyres / balancing.

My trip to Jacksons was very successful...no more vibrations at 80!!

Nice to browse through Mat Jacksons trophies lining the workshop walls too :)

Problem sorted.

It is the balancing - end of issue!

After trying new tyres, laser wheel alignment, balancing a few times and finally new OZ racing Alloys - the vibration persisted.

Visited balance tyres site and found the nearest centre with the Hunter road force balancing machine and this morning visited them after first making sure my pressures were spot on first. Best part of 2 hours drive there and steering wheel shake was there at 78-82 ish and relatively bad. 30 mins later the problem has totally gone at all speeds (up to 90). The garage (Mill tyres in Boston) checked the balanced tyres with the balancing weights still I'm. All 4 were quite far out. They highlighted that 1 of them especially was out as the tyre itself was not round and that due to the different tyre sizes from front to rear they couldn't actually arrange the 4 wheels to the best positions but were still confident the new balancing would sort it out.

And they were correct!!!!!!!!

Happy days

Hub and wheel faces cleaned and correctly torqued bolts sorted mine out.

There was no way the fronts were torqued up properly when we removed them .
