Attached File  DSCF1412.JPG   51.44K   28 downloadsMine was done under warranty. It`s a REALLY big job.Gearbox out, flywheel off, left side of engine off .Then both chains all tensioners and variable cam sprockets changed. They told me if I had to pay for it the cost would have been circa £4800.

Let`s hope it the heat sheilds.

It's a shame you don't have extended warranty.....

How long has it been like this ?

Only just started over last few days, I've done 1600 miles since I bought it and it's been faultless , it's strange as I thought the chain rattle would be a continuous noise and not just when it's cold

It's a big job........

TT 3.2 has been plagued by timing chain rattles over the years but mainly the MK1......

When i bought our 3.2 in 2004 i took VCDS with me so i could look at engine blocks 208-209 and check the numbers, anything past -8 was a fairly good indicator of the chain stretching.....

If i remember there is a measurement of valve timing that can be checked on the 5 pot in VCDS that's a good indicator of chain problems.

The cam variators will also need replacement as these can start failing too.

These cars in my opinion need regular oil & filter changes as Audi schedules can be far apart, remember that oil is the lifeblood of any engine, especially one as powerful as ours.

Mine always get an extra oil & filter change between the scheduled Audi ones, for the sake of £90 odd it's worth doing.

Private sale or a main dealer ?

It was a dealer ,
Specialist cars in Sheffield , so not a main dealer but a reputable one

Maybe worth either trying them or an Audi main dealer, if the car has any main dealer history, see if there's any goodwill towards possible repairs if it turns out to be the chains.

As someone who's had to replace a Dual mass flywheel on our ex-3.2 TT I can tell you the time it takes in stripping down and removing the Gearbox is best part of a day......so you can imagine the labour involved doing the same on an RS3 and doing the chains too.

Booked it in with Audi for the 10th April for the diagnostic investigation, hopefully they give me some kind of answer , although pretty sure chain or tensioner at fault

If you are paying from your own pocket, it maybe best to find a good independent to give you a quote......

I can't imagine many Audi techs that would like to do this job..........

I rang ivc in hunslet and they said I would be better getting Audi to do it as they quote off their times on computer , so if it says 15 hours to do the job and they take 30 hours , they have to charge for the 15 hours that the computer says , an independent charges for total hours taken

Plus not sure of any independent specialists that would be up to the job or be able to quote for it ,needs diagnosis first and see what faults are showing
