Shaun, the B7 RS4 discs are 365 mm and pinned rather than slotted so an even worse design than what we have so I can't se how 370mm RS3 discs couldn't work, like you said perhaps for track work but for me this is just improved road use.

If only to show the revised 47i6 brake caliper mounting arrangement - the bit you need to change to mount a different brake caliper:
This is one of the first 47i6 upgrades (maybe catnip's) applied to a UK based car that arrived in my garage for review: note the new and revised brake caliper mounting bracket required for the 47i6 brake caliper modified to utilise the REQILL® Tuned Absorbers (and in my view the ineffective and useless REQILL® Tuned Absorbers ).
You can clearly differentiate between the original and revised parts by looking at the aged/corroded original parts.

The guys at Bks-tuning confirm their mounting bracket is correct for fitment of this 8 pot.

I'd probably take the splash guard off or give it a bit of a hair cut

If you go the 8-pot route the B7 RS4 owners were evenly split between Ferrodo DS2500 and Yellowstuffs for pads to use. I did the latter with no adverse effects and both have brake wear sensors.

The 8v discs are pretty similar as well Graham so I agree they should work ok.

Splash (dirt shields) guards for road cars are not at all necessary, Sean: I had this discussion with Lockheed/Girling many years ago whilst in a professional capacity; I also believe sans shields helps in brake disc cooling as far more surface area is exposed to the available air flow; our A2 for example came with rusty brake discs (purchased immediately after a Stafford Audi MOT) and near rotten dirt shield and I had zero hesitation in binning 'em. Suzy (our A2) runs sans dirt shields front and rear with zero adverse effect.
With all the Audi messing around with front ducts on the 8P RS3 I remain surprised they didn't bin 'em; and as you've already discovered/measured, the offside brake disc running hotter than the nearside brake disc anyway, or was it the nearside running hotter… One or the other anyway.

I agree John........
Just had this very discussion with the mechanic across the way, he agrees better to remove splash guard altogether as it hinders air flow and cooling
I've decided that's what I'm gonna do

When we measured temps it was indeed drivers side running 60 deg hotter
Bracket and Calipers will be ordered before end of the day

Sorry John...........
What about the rears?
You think there could be a fouling issue between wheel and front caliper .........? the calipers I'm thinking of using don't have that anti-squeal bobbin on

No Sean, not the fronts; it'sjust that when I took a look at an 8V RS3 at Stafford Audi recently and in particular its front brakes I was surprised by how much Audi had beefed-up the rears - so was just thinking of front to rear brake balance.

8 V RS 3 still uses 310 x 22 rear discs

Yep, tis the caliper that's changed and not the disc diameter; and P_G is 100% correct, it was just an observation...

Ceramic brakes would be the holy grail , but horrendously expensive.
