Hi,
I’m after a bit of advice regarding tyre sizes.

My RS 3 came still fitted with those dreadful OE Continentals. I’m going to fit Michelin PSS’s
However, currently the car has the 235 on the rear & 255’s on the front. I’m happy with the way it handles like this.
Would it be better to -

A. Keep it as it is?

B. Go back to 255’s on the rear & 235’s on the front.
Not sure what difference this will make?

C. fit 235’s all round?
Again, not sure what difference this will make?
Admittedly, option C. would the advantage of a bit more rim protection on the front.

Just wondering what combinations you Guy’s would recommend I use?

Thanks.

255 won't fit on the rear.....

Michelins are what a lot of RS 3 owners are using.

255 / 30 / 19 8.5j alloy on the front was an option from the factory

You can fit 235 / 35 / 19 on the rear some have reported rubbing occasionally, others have had no probs.

Standard rear size is 225 / 35 / 19.

Tyre fitment label is on the inside of drivers door.

Just don't put the 255 on the rear.

235 all round is handy as it's easier should you want to rotate them.

Just bought a set of MPSS from tyreleader at £580 delivered.
225's and 255's

I know others here have had issues with that company so be aware there are others You can use like pneus online if you want to check around.

Price doesn't include fitting. I have a great local guy who does it pretty cheap at 10/tyre. While this maybe makes it less of a bargain I trust him to do the job properly and well. Helps he's a petrolhead too.

Appreciate the replies.

I have to confess, that I made an error in that my RS 3 has 225’s on the front & not as previously stated 255’s – My Bad!

I think I’m going to go with 235’s all round – at worst, if I’m not happy with that setup I’ll just buy another pair of 225’s & keep a pair of 235’s as spare for the rears.

Standard tyre size for the front is 235 / 35 / 19.

I don't see why anybody would put 225's on the front.....

Front 235 or 255

Rear 225 only.

Some idiot has put your wheels on back to front.

Be advised, lots on here have run 235 on the back, but they can scuff and catch with heavies in the back.
If it was ok to fit 235's all round then Audi would have done that!

True but only if you have the optional 8.5J wide front wheels, if you have the standard 8J all round you do NOT want to be fitting 255/30, that's far too wide for an 8 inch wheel.

You did check that you 100% have the optional wider front wheels?

Just as well I have you to keep me right! A belated thanks for that.

Eventually checked and yes, the option code list for my car shows 8J so I now have a spare set of nice wide tyres.

I ordered a pair of 235's from tyreleader and they arrived in 3 days. Great service and great price too.

All being fitted tomorrow along with my Miltek 2nd cat bypass pipes.

Now, just to give some assistance to any other dumplings like me out there the codes to look for are :

C5S - Alloy wheels 8J x 19

H1Y - Front Tires 235/35 R19 91Y, Rear Tires 225/35 R19 88Y XL (Note the spelling of "tyres"!)

CheeRS,

Hi there,

I have 235/35/R19 91Y's all round and have had no problems. I don't really take heavy load in the car and have not had rubbing problems. Audi informed me that you can fit a large tyre option to the fronts. i.e. 255 for extra grip, but say that at high speed above 70mph the speedometer can become off by 1-2mph because of the wheel rotations...so just for the sake of this went with 235 option all round on Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's and not had any problems and the cars handles and grip better than an 11 plate 911 Carerra.

:)

Hi mate, how can you check if you have the wider front alloys? I am running 235's all around but no idea how to check if I can order 255/30/19 for the fronts? cheers!

I have not noticed the speedo being that out on 255 fronts dash speed against various gps and track timing beams and thats at speeds up to 181 mph.

Its actually been difficult to attribute any small difference to the speedo inaccuracy or the delay in the GPS signal hitting the device.

Would you realistically notice the difference in going for the incorrect wider tyres for that rim vs just better tyres though?

Biggest difference I noticed was reduction in under steer just by swapping to Michelins but staying with stock sizes. Not sure it makes the extra difference in the real world but someone prove me wrong.

I have no way of checking because I cant take the wheels off, but will ask Audi when my new brakes are on at the end of the month! thanks Duke!

You shouldn't need to take a wheel off you just need to see the back of the wheel. Put it on full lock and photo or video the inside of the wheel or even use the mrs makeup mirror. You can feel where it's stamped from the indent in the wheel.

If you can get it on a ramp that will make things easier alternatively use a drop kerb to put one front wheel on the kerb to lift the wheel enough for you to see the inside.

If your car came on 235 fronts it's most likely an 8J wheel there's not that many on an 8.5J and the option wasn't initially available at launch or in the UK.

But you can't but the 255 tyre on the 8J rim the tyre manufactures state its too wide, from the Michelin site;
