Hi guys

I have had my RS3 at Preston Audi yesterday to apply the long awaited brake fix.

The discs and pads are definatly new, but not so sure about the callipers, have been told that they are new ones as well but they look just the same as the old ones to me plus I can see at the back of them the " anti vibration weights ".

Here are some pictures for you to look at

Attached File  034.JPG   30.69K   30 downloads

Attached File  036.JPG   31.56K   22 downloads

Attached File  031.JPG   30.64K   21 downloads

The braking is perfect, the pedal has got a bit more travel then what I would like, but the sponginess that I could feel when they applied the shims at the back of the pads ( temp. fix ) is not there anymore.

Happy days Catnip. My local dealer has confirmed the replacement brake kit does include discs, calipers and pads. Lattyboy, are the "anti-vibration weights" new to the replacement kit? Wondered if that might help my steering shake...sorry if I sound stupid.

I got that plus "Brake really hard to get rid of it"  Yea thanks... i'll do that in stop start town traffic eh!

Ring Audi UK up and cut out the middle man.

Danny, this won't help with your steering shake.  I can't think of a way the brake pad/disc could be causing that at 75-80mph, if a pad was catching that badly you'd hear a constant grinding noise (like when the discs 'rust' over after being wet then standing for some time.  Warped brake discs or sometimes pad material build up on the disc (blocking the ventilation holes) will cause shake through the wheel under braking but not when driving at a certain speed.

I know you've had the wheels balanced several times but I'm almost certain it's just the balancing.  That said I agree you should continue to push for a solution, If it turns out to be another problem and they solve it I'm happy to be wrong. All I can say from my experience is that they kept trying different weight positions and eventually the problem was cured.

MBK, i'm still convinced myself it is the balancing. I'm going to start the whole process with another dealer on wednesday. I'll keep you posted. I've had this problem from Day . I will get to the bottem of this. I really want to drive to Germany but honestly after 2 hours of shaking you start to feel sick. MacD, have done exactly that and have it logged with Audi UK. Waiting for a call back.

I had a bad wheel vibration on a VW I bought secondhand a fair few years ago.  Between 80 and 85 it was awful (kph of course !!)  It turned out to be the balancing in the end but it took 4 attempts to balance it - it was a bit of a tricky alloy / tyre combination it seems and needed very careful "dynamic" balancing (inside and outside of rim).

OK, my pet subject as most of you regulars will know already.

Had my second Audi RS3 with 'official' Audi brake-squeal-modifications over my pit today (don't ask) and the changes to this second RS3 are different to the first!  I've said before that us owners are being used for development so stay with me here…

Car #1: This RS3 has:

1) New brake calipers and brake caliper mountings.  The brake calipers are complete with 2-noise-damping bobbins per caliper (as photo).

IMPORTANT: these noise-damping bobbins are not intended to address the cause of the brake squeal, only the reaction i.e., the bl**dy noise you hear that is pi**ing OFF those who have it!

2) New brake pads.

3) New brake discs?  No!

Note: this first car was NOT modified here in the UK but elsewhere; and I am not a liberty to provide the location other than it was in a financially viable part of the EU (so that rules out: France, Italy, Greece, Spain, etc.)  However, this car retained its original brake discs (part number #8P0.615.301).

RESULTS: the owner reports that even with new brake calipers, etc., he still experiences brake squeal when braking typically at local supermarket speeds (5 to 0mph).

No authoritative advice from Audi but it may as well be: practice on-line shopping.

Car #2: This RS3 has:

1) New brake calipers (and brake caliper mountings) complete with 2-antivibration (noise-damping bobbins per caliper (actual photo).

BrakeMod978_zps981f2575.jpg

2) New brake pads

3) New brake discs part number #8P0.615.301.B.  Note the 'B' suffix, this is the later brake disc!

Note: this second car WAS recently modified here in the UK.  I believe this car to be one of the first in the May 2013 Audi UK modification program.  But it is NOT a RE-CALL as it is not a safety critical issue but will be applied as and when during the Audi Service system.

RESULTS: to early to say, but zero brake squeal at this time.

It frightens me that owners are being asked/told and/or made party to an agreement with Audi dealers (maybe Audi UK) to ensure they will NOT post/advertise details/results of this ongoing saga.  BUT we're talking about Audi here, not some Mickey Mouse company, but Audi.

My brakes do not squeal, as my own 'fix' remains effective!

Most owners/customers have spent (one way or another) between 35 and 50K on an Audi RS3 and these guys (Audi UK) are currently using a 'scattergun' resolution i.e., we'll look at your care if you promise (sign here) not to tell anyone else and if we do apply a 'fix' then (sign here) so that we know you’re a happy customer!

At NO time (even as I write) has Audi UK supplied a definitive action plan to resolve this issue.

A seriously GREAT car, but my marker is down that Audi/Brembo are now using owners to resolve/develop a resolution to Audi/Brembo brake squeal issues!

autops.co.uk in Brackley are advertising: "New Brembo Sport Pad For Audi TTRS & RS3".

"Fed up with squeaking factory
front brake pads on your TT RS or RS3?  We have an answer for you: The Brembo Sport brake pad set! Tried and tested cost effective pad upgrade available from APS."

APS's advertised price is £116 inc Vat.

And Audi/Brembo are NOW changing: brake calipers with anti-vibration bobbins, brake caliper support brackets, brake pads, and lastly brake discs (with a 'B' part number suffix).

Is someone at Audi/Brembo taking the p***?

Does anyone at Audi/Brembo understand the cause?

Does anyone at Audi/Brembo have any idea of a cost effective yet permanent resolution?

The issue on my car first occured at 1315-miles, self-adhesive anti-squeal shims were applied withing 50-miles, and the brake squeal issue has never since returned...  So, back to: Does anyone at Audi/Brembo understand the cause?

John, thanks for your analysis!  Mine is in on Wednesday for new discs, pads and calipers.  This is apparently the official fix.  Obviously they tried a combination of the parts until getting to the position where all 3 needed to be replaced.  Will post some pics of mine when it is done on Wednesday!

Nice write up John,

Good to see that there are plenty getting booked in now for the fix.

I shall be checking mine on its return (This week fingers crossed) to see that it has had the discs exchanged too.

Well the fun continues with Audi. I have just had my call from Trevor who manages Scotland and North East for Audi CS and my car is not being booked in for the fix as it is a development fix and 20 cars have already been booked in using all the parts they have. So those of you who have been booked in appear to be the lucky ones. The fix is supposedly purely and auditory one and will not resolve my high speed wet weather breaking (or lack of) issues so he is going to consult with Tyneside Audi to see what their diagnosis of my brakes were and get back to me when I am back in the UK on Friday to advise what is next.

ETA on next batch of brake squeel fix parts.... unknown!

Those who have been booked in could you list your names on this thread or perhaps a new thread so we can see if there is only 20 or whether what I was advised is less than truthful? I realise there is a possibility that not all 20 members are on here / forums but it will give a good approximation.

I thought the wet weather issue was simply to do with a software upgrade.

Not sure how it could be as the car doesn't sense it's wet or raining but that certainly was banded about.

I'd never suffered this issue until the Wales run out where it caught me on a couple of corners and was VERY unnerving to say the least!
In fact it was following that run I lost confidence in the brakes and demanded Audi do something.

If you look on modern Audi's the ABS has brake sweep programmed into it linked to the rain sensors so it inperceptably applies light pressure on the discs to clear the water from them. Much like on the ceramics. I can only thnk on a 12 year old platform that 8P is they haven't programmed this so whe I got o apply brakes after a long period of inactivity oin the wet there is no retardation until the 'clean up' What is more unnerving is that the offside, where holes were drilled for extra ventilation, suffers more than the nearside so when there is some retardation the car violently pulls to the nearside. Several stabs later and balance and normal breakig is resumed.

Perhaps the software update will program brake sweep in but who knows because I don't think Audi UK,, or rephrased certain people there know what it does.

Well I haven't got rain sensors so it'd be an impossible fix for mine then.

Hence i cant see that they'd apply that 'fix' to just some cars then.

Mine certainly didnt pull,  just felt heavily delayed and almost non existent initially.     Sound's like yours is WAY worse and there's no way it should pull!

I'd be demanding a courtesy car until fixed if that was me.

Mines in tomorrow, at Worthing Audi. My brake squeal is very intermittent and minor, but I mentioned it during conversions over the broken Propshaft, so I assume i was put to the top of the waiting list. Im only on 3200 miles, of which Ive put on 1000 of them in the last 9 weeks or so.

How did you break the prop shaft Oli?

There's software to solve that issue now.
