Hi,

Hardly post as the car has been perfect until now
..headgasket has gone at 50k.

Anyone recommend a garage in SE London or Reading?

Unluckily it's happened 300 miles after a MRC remap.

Places I know are storm and MRC but any other recommendations would be useful.

Thank you in advance

Forgot to add anything else that is suggested to be replaced when this is done?

I have done a few head gaskets on simpler cars but not on a RS. Prefer to send to garage for peace of mind. Unless someone can share a guide for me to have a quick look at?

MRC do a health check before remap so if it was ok before it strongly suggests the remap is to blame.

I did the following diagnosis.

Water was low in coolant, topped about 200ml.
Drove 40 miles to the airport and left car for a week.
Engine on - check coolant, topped another 400ml max and started journey home.
After 10 miles lights on again.

Pulled over and checked the following:
Coolant low in header tank - opened and water returned.
Oil level over the max mark (I never overfill)
No water leaks under car
Mayonnaise on oil filler cap.

After 2nd top up car sounded rough so stopped it carried out above checks and got it towed home.

I will call MRC tomorrow, but would they have done the oil and water checks to see if there was cross contamination?

On the MRC front how can a remap cause a head gasket to fail?

Too much boost and or timing. But to be fair the pistons would usually give up first.

If it wasn't for the mayonnaise on the oil filter cap after a long drive I would have had a good look at the "O" ring on the coolant expansion tank cap if that is damage you won't hold pressure which will lets the water boil up.

Water can drop then as you release cap it refills the reservoir.

On the oil did you check while it was hot ? It will over read because it expands.

Hi,

I checked the oil when it was cold once I put the car in the garage. It was still over by a large amount.

I will call MRC and see what they suggest, hopefully they can sort it otherwise will have to fork out to get it fixed.

Good news - not the head gasket
Bad news - oil cooler is at fault
Bad news - oil cooler is on back order!

Anyone used a non OEM oil cooler for the 8v?

Yes I have a bigger oil cooler supplied nd fitted by Regal Autosports. The oem one is tiny and TTE suggested an upgrade would be a good idea. I am sure it does ok for standard or mild mapping and I had no issues when I ran stage 2.

Hi,

Do you have details on the oil cooler fitted by Regal?
I had a search online and could only see a suitable one from bartec.

Thank you

The oil cooler fitted to the RS is of the oil/water type item No7 in photo.

The heat from the oil is transferred to the coolant water & vice versa when the engine is warming up.

Dell thank you for the picture.

Interesting design the cooler has for water and oil. Never seen one like it, I've only used oil coolers on my old car that go from a oil filter plate.

Might be to ensure the temperature differential between the water and oil jackets in the engine is kept low.

Vik.

VAG have been using this design oil cooler going back to the MK1 Golf as it's very compact & to a point efficient for the engines needs tbh,I removed the water/oil cooler on an old MK2 16v Golf & fitted a standalone oil cooler when it was supercharged.

The down side with the water/oil cooler is when it fails you have a water/oil contamination.

Most of the time I see 105' oil temperature (probably the same as the water temperature) on motorways but i have seen on a very hot trackday 127'

Hi,

I've never seen it and does make sense...but as stated oil/water contamination is the risk

Is anyone able to share the workshop guide on replacing the oil cooler, would be good to see how much work it is to replace.

Thank you
