Sean can you retrofit a "there's no place like home" button to the steering wheel next time you get off work to get us all out of our current predicament?

Looking forward to your update when you get the time Sean.
What did you do with the centre console with the original button? I wonder if there are any other buttons that can replace it.

1) Remove battery connection
2) Remove steering column top trim
3) Remove and disconnect Airbag place to one side
4) Remove black centre circular trim / wheel buttons by inserting trim tool to pop the button parts first, then gently lift the T shaped clips inside around the circumference inside, once free you can unplug all the white multi-plugs from it.
5) Once you have the black wheel trim off you’ll see the recess part where the buttons go
6) you then need to put the plastic guide into that recess to mark the hole / cutout positions ready for the Dremel works.
7) then cut out for the screw holes and connector slot with the dremel
8) the buttons have locating tabs/hooks on the rear, use these to locate the button then put the plastic shim back in on the inside and use the screws to fix the button to the wheel trim.

https://uploads.tapa...24fe4b0aa0a.jpg
9) repeat for the opposite side then you’ll have this.

10) Clean off the plastics from the Dremel works and then plug in the wiring loom that comes with the buttons Kit/ reconnect the paddle connections etc
https://uploads.tapa...9a445e977a2.jpg
https://uploads.tapa...935b3f09fd3.jpg
11) Connect up the airbag loom / black connector, re-seat the black connector in its foam cut out at the back.
You need to make sure all the extra wires are out of the way of the airbag, otherwise it won’t sit properly in the recess and your horn might not work.
https://uploads.tapa...c2200733b92.jpg
12) everything back in
https://uploads.tapa...42dc35ceed6.jpg
https://uploads.tapa...8bb55990f6f.jpg
13) Pop out the DSG gaiter trim and pull it up out of the way, then Pop up the centre console trim by inserting a trim tool in the gap
https://uploads.tapa...8858c24c4bb.jpg
14) locate the Start button multiplug and remove it. Then slide it out of the plastic cover by pushing down on the locking tab
You’ll then see the numbered plug
https://uploads.tapa...c89f7fcdb21.jpg
15) The kit has 2 wires that piggyback into this block so you need to remove pins 3 & 6 and insert the 2 wires with the female connections on into this block, like this
https://uploads.tapa...b352f66c802.jpg
The 2 wires you removed from 3 & 6 go into the New button loom blue connector.
https://uploads.tapa...473dedc8d6c.jpg
Refit the black plastic connector cover for the start button and plug it back in.
16) The wireless receiver needs 12v and earth so I used the handbrake switch multiplug as a feed and there’s an earth point bolt /nut below the DSG lever
https://uploads.tapa...24d19513696.jpg
https://uploads.tapa...96c986b8195.jpg
17) once the 4 connections are made you can then tape everything up / plug in the receiver module to the loom, then tuck the wires back into the centre console out of the way.
Once you reconnect the battery you’ll see a light flash on the blue covered receiver module, to let you know it’s operating.
https://uploads.tapa...5ceeed08689.jpg
18) once you are happy refit the console trim and DSG gaiter then test the 2 buttons on the wheel.
Any questions just shout.

Did you get integrated for MQB or Audi? I assume Audi although I thought the RS3 was built on the MQB platform.

I wonder if there is a blank button that could be bought to change the function to something else, maybe in silver or black?

Dunno. If it bothered me I’d just buy the trim from a non keyless car.
