I've got a 8v FL (2018) currently bone stock, I'm local to a place that manufactures tuning boxes with a good rep so was thinking of going down that route for warranty purposes but the car has now become a weekend car rather than a daily commuter so I'm thinking of going, relatively, full send.

Im based in the North East of England, so no I don't want a trip to MRC before anyone suggests :)

I will be wanting a sports cat down pipe and an intercooler that doesn't require a crash bar mod, which I know will limit options.

APR seem out of the window for stage 2, I do like the idea of Revo as I can match all the hardware but they only have stage 1+ software at the minute, so that's leaving me with Racingline oem+ stage 2. The only other place I'd be confident going for a custom map that I'm aware of is JM imports.

My thoughts were:
OEM+ stage 2 ecu tune and tcu
Scorpion sports cat down pipe
Raclingline panel filter with a forge hard pipe
Infinit Performance intercooler

As much as its going to be a weekend car I've still got to be able to stick the kids and missus in and go for family trips, so I'm not trying to go for a total mental build.

Any helps or thoughts are appreciated
Cheers

I've had my PFL revo stage 2 tuned at BTG in Tyne Tunnel Trading Estate in North Shields. They were spot on tbh, no problems at all. If you'd rather go APR then JM Imports in Cramlington is the one I would go to. Both are really good.

I'd use a full ECU remap over a tuning box, I just think it's worth doing a job properly if you're gonna do it. If you're worried about warranty though I'd just wait, but tbh the way Audi squirm out of everything warranty wise then I'd just do it anyway. Just make sure you're looking after the car and let it warm up before hooning around and make sure you get it regularly serviced by a proper independent that specialises in VAG cars.

I personally went stage 1 then stage 2 just to see how different modifications effected different things and it's made it easier to appreciate what's been done rather than just feeling like you get into a different car, but that's just me.

Yeah I've been looking at BTG but Revo don't do stage 2 for the FL and APR don't do stage 2 at all now. I contacted JM and they did say they could offer a custom map at stage 2.

I've seen a lot of posts saying stage 1 is best bang for buck I just can't help but feel like the car would benefit from a gearbox map too.

Yeah, I totally agree tbh, stage 1 is definitely best bang for your buck. I didn't notice a massive difference between stage 1 and stage 2, but the big thing for me is protecting the engine and ensuring I'm not doing damage pushing my luck with boost temperatures etc.

Obviously Jurgen has a fantastic rep for doing custom tunes, even if it is generally all on the GTRs, but I've always felt there is more safety in an off the shelf tune even if its not going to push the engine quite as far.

AFAIK APR aren't going to bring out a stage 2 tune at all, but if revo are still working on it they do a deal where your upgrade from a stage 1 to stage 2 map is like 90% discounted so that might sway you slightly. I've struggled getting in touch with BTG though recently, Scott changed the phone system and I'm not sure it's working that well so if you decide to go with revo let me know and I'll ping you across his number. I dunno how long he's been doing custom tunes for though as Jordan has sold up, so for your custom tune I'd still go to Jurgen.

As for gearbox map, I've been thinking the same. I'm still considering getting the TTU one and bootlegging to Tamworth, but APR do a DSG tune for the PFL so I'm also tempted to see Jurgen and see how that is first.

  • LocationUsually in the dyno cell

I`d go with Ben @ TTU  for sure. Leave the car with him. There`s a car hire place almost next door to get you home. They have some lovely 1.0 Corsas. :(

Just been having a chat with racingline on Instagram, probably swayed me. Free software upgrades for life, their gearbox software is also progressive/dynamic so adjusts with the torque inputs from the ecu so it's not harsh all the time and can be used from stock to stage 3.

Thinking I might start with an oem+ stage 1 and TCU tune, along with their panel filter for now. Should be around 1200 all in but they had 20% off just before Christmas so I will probably wait for another promotion to come along.

Then if I want to go stage 2 down the line it's just a case of paying for the hardware. They also told me they've got a carbon intake being released in the next couple of weeks, then they'll be onto developing an intercooler and downpipe.

Only thing I liked about Revo software was exhaust valves always fully open in sport, which racingline don't do. Can't have it all I suppose!

Hi Gareth,
What area do you live in? I did stage 2 with Regal Autosport in Southampton with very similar hardware. I have used them on 2 previous cars and had no issues. My stage 2 tune was at 530, but we knocked it back to 516hp to get a smoother graph and that’s in a mustang dyno. You won’t be disappointed with stage 2 because the daza engine really pulls.

Also I used the plug in unit for the rear valves which keeps them open all the time.

North East so opposite end of the country unfortunately!

Does this keep them literally all the time or just when in certain settings? Like the idea of going quiet when I've got the kids in the car but nice and loud when I'm by myself!

I’ve gone Dyno Spectrum DS1 route.
Flash yourself in less than 3 minutes and if you want to learn you can use TunerPro to view mapping tables.
Fully customisable and there are OTS Stages 1-4 maps plus there are options to have tuners supply files to flash.

I’ve no waste-gate / cat heat rattle, exhaust valves open all the time in Dynamic (or any mode if you want)
Maps for 91/93/100/105 octane / flex fuel / ethanol
DS2 data logger so you can do live logging while on the road.
Sound tuning ALA pops bangs etc can be altered to suit your taste.

Combined with TVS Stage2+ TCU software the car is now a beast.

I’ve got some Dyno Time at Peron Automotive soon when lockdown lifts, we are going to Dyno all the stages plus my current bespoke Stage 2 map to see what they produce.

Interesting! Not sure I'd trust myself to custom map, how easy is the interface. I.e. Does it come with pre loaded stage 1,2 etc and you can add on the other options with a click?

What exhaust are you running and how much difference does the flaps open in sport make to the sound?

All the OTS maps are downloaded onto the interface
You can use one of the many custom tuners who provide maps for the RS3, it’s as easy as sending them your OTS file /stock XDF definitions file and they will customise the map to your car.
The Dyno spectrum has a ‘live’ tuning capability via TunerPro so a custom tune can be done while on a RR if preferred.

There are guides available for wastegate rattle changes / sound tuning etc in the Dyno spectrum FB Group.

Car sounds immense with some sound tuning, I’ve had sound changes implemented by my custom tuner.

I'm sure it's good once you're into it but sounds like too much effort for me, I'd probs end up blowing something up too

Agreed it’s not for everyone but is a good way to learn about mapping etc.

Don't pay £800 for the infinite cooler. Same cooler can be had for around 350-400

You will want a turbo elbow, be it forge unitronic or eventuri

Scorpion downpipe is a nice option and well priced

Raclingline software is good and Ben Wardle has been tuning cars for a long time. i don't have experience with the RS3 software though.

I've since seen the Wagner Evo1 which also doesn't require the crash bar mod for about £750, had just seen the evo3 I think before which is bigger, more expensive and requires the crash bar mod.

Out of interest where is the cheaper cooler you're referring to? From China?!

Yeah I was looking last night and saw the forge turbo elbow. Plenty on ebay sold as a kit along with the hard pipe.

Think I'll be going stage 1 to begin with though then plenty of time to decide what hardware to get or for racingline to catch up and release theirs.
