Hi guys,

I'm in the middle of renewing the whole suspension, starting with the front and working back and currently have the wishbones like these : https://www.superpro...-999500665/vid-

Also the ball joints : https://www.autodoc....IhoCcUQQAvD_BwE

I've still yet to buy the coilovers but they will come in due course  :D .

My question is, has anyone done this themselves? I've removed the old and fitted the new wishbone on the drivers side but i'll be doing the passenger side tomorrow and I've sussed the job up but it seems like its going to be impossible to remove one of the bolts without taking off the whole assembly carrier which I don't really fancy doing as it makes the job more complicated and i'm a great believer in if its not broke, don't fix/touch it..If I need to then I will, but it wont be tomorrow as I need the car for work.

Any recommendations / advice on this would be great  :up_it:

I had the same problem. Unfortunately you have to drop the subframe to get that bolt out ,then have a 4 wheel alignment afterwards.

Rob/Neil.

I fitted a dead center subframe collar kit which eliminates the slop & keeps it as factory fit.

Off course you will need to have the tracking check due to the new wishbones if it's been retracked in the past.

These tapered inserts take out the play where the bolts pass thought the subframe.

Will dropping the subframe put anything major out of whack/sync if you know what I mean? Was it easy or anything I should be wary about? I've never done it before and i didn't plan on doing it as it should be an hours job to change the wishbones but it seems nothing is simple on these and Audi make it virtually impossible to change serviceable parts!

Does the subframe need to be realigned perfectly as before? When it goes back, surely it cant be that far out (if at all) as you line the bolts up with the holes, get all the bolts in loosely and then tighten...  :89: .

Cheers!

As the bolts/holes in the subframe are a sloppy fit you can find it moves the wishbone across either side & put the rack/steering out even if you witness mark it,the dead center inserts stop that from happening.

I've had the rack/steering go out of alignment when the subframe was dropped to decat the downpipe which was corrected with the inserts.

Just be careful not to cross thread the subframe bolts when refitting them & sump the engine.

Where can these be bought from Dell? Im surprised the bolts in the subframe are loose, surely that's a bad design from Audi's front!

Is there a torque for these bolts so they cant be crossthreaded / over tightened?

Cheers  :up_it:

Rob.

The subframe inserts I used are a Chinese copy of the 034 one's for the 8P/1K Golf platform which was via a link I can't find at this time from Jay.

On the VW 1K Golf Eg Mk5/Mk6 it's a common fault where the front subframe moves & makes a noise when steering at low speed.

Our Audi's don't suffer from the same problem as they use a different stretch bolt but realining the subframe once loosen off can cause you an issue.

I'll try & find the link & bolt tighting torque values as from memory it's done in 2 stages + 90'

As always Dell, spot on information. Appreciate that. I'll get these on the to do list, it looks like a fairly time consuming job to drop the subframe from what I can see, aswell as change the wishbones and ball joints. It wont be a quick weekend job  :P .

Cheers!

Rob.

Tbh dropping the subframe a small amount isn't that time consuming....just the 6 18mm bolts need undoing.

If you don't install a dead center kit the subframe bolts go back in easily due to the slop, but with the kit you will need to get the subframe perfectly parallel to the floorpan to avoid cross threading the bolts on start up.
