Look - I think the problem you have got here is that LPG reduces power by 15 - 25% - first issue.

Second, there is no spare wheel well so where is the tank going to go?

Third - you lose the lubrication properties associated with the petrol system - really not good in a car like this. You also junk pretty much all of the warranty in one stroke.  Also, I daren't think what it would do to the residual value.

I get fed up with the number of trips to the filling station and the associated cost but, unfortunately it comes with the territory. A more economical car is the answer if it really doesn't suit.

Financially when you take into account the conversion cost, the warranty issue and the residual issue it cannot make sense.

It doesn't make sense from an RS3's drivers point of view either.

Looks like we were typing at the same time ED... Just took ages for mine to post due to terrific net speeds in the middle of the ocean!!

Don't worry - I am moving up to the Fen in 8 weeks time - BT claim 'fast' internet is available but I bet I may as well be in the middle of the Atlantic...

I do not really see the appeal of trying to run an RS3 on LPG.

There would be some side effects, notably that the intake valves would lose the cooling effect from normal fuel: petrol engines utilise the fact that the fuel is a liquid to cool the intake valves, this would be lost burning gas... Maybe not an issue short term but...

Then there's going to be a percentage power loss, because the gas would require more molecules to be burnt, when compared to petrol, to meet the correct fuel/air ratio.

Plus LPG would not greatly decrease the fuel consumption, just that it's cheaper than petrol.

Then the big one: where would the gas tank go? Normally they fit in the spare wheel well...

There you go, eventually I get a straight forward answer instead of insulting sarcasm that is no help at all.
If it’s a joke then why have a forum where people ask questions about things they don’t know about and tossers taking the piss thinking that everyone should know the answer already or twisting it around to make me look a fool when it’s a legitimate question?

Unfortunately it’s that time of the month all of the time when everyone jumps on the bandwagon of unhelpful answers

As Ozmosis and I set out the idea doesn't work. The other comments were really a sympton of this as the idea is beyond left field given the car.

I am not a great fan of the petrol station forecourt either - I have had the pleasure of visiting one 3 times in one day so I know where you are coming from (tanked up today at £1.41/L which was a miserable experience) but we all knew what we were getting into at the outset.

You can try to drive it like a normal car (boring) which improves mpg by about 50% or you can just enjoy it and pay the price.  If I wanted to drive 'normal' I would have bought a 1.5 TFSI and saved £25k - having spent the extra then you just need to feed the beast and let rip otherwise what's the point?

I have found this thread quite enjoyable really and it would be great if someone came up with an alternative way to run these great cars without being at the behest of the oil companies and our delightful corporations (I mean governments). Truth is I am concerned after having made the plunge and bought this great car that we are in a manufactured consent controlled state where the sheeple just agree to every BS bit of legislation that gets handed down from the UK or Brussels or wherever you are from that an all electric 5G controlled zombie planet is the way to go. Yup draining the wallet at the pump is a pain in the rear end but it's worth it for the noise of the car and the joy it brings.

I do hope you find a suitable alternative to keeping your treasured beastie fueled and running to your liking, it would be a shame to loose an owner to something like this.

I got 34mpg out of mine once but that was driving up to Birmingham uo the M1 with a 50mph limit pretty much all the way - I wished I had taken the Mrs 8P 2.0L D. As you say - it is 70-75% tax for every litre - really annoying.

  • LocationIn a barge near Roy's old barge
I reckon I spent £10k in fuel on mine, 44k miles at 26mpg at about £6 a gallon. Worth every penny.

Sounds about right - puts it into perspective.
