Finally we completed the 8V.1 build

I started a thread a while ago to document the build for those that were interested and thought I would post where we finished with the build and the results we have obtained from the car. 

 

Nothing would have been possible without the incredible work of Trent Demos and his brother Chris of ETuners. Close to 300 dyno runs have been done on the car and no stone has been left unturned to get it right. 

 

The whole vision for the car from the start was to produce a car that run on 98 pump gas, that was drivable on the street without too much lag associated with a really big turbo and one that could equally rock up to the circuit or the drag strip and go very fast. 

 

I should also point out that I am not cashed up and this was about a passion for developing the car to go as fast as it could go.  

 

The initial big turbo build on the car managed 350wkw and a 10.66 pass at 133mph and certainly achieved the initial outcome we were looking for. The tune was spot on and the car ran perfectly from the get-go. We knew however that it could go faster and if so, what would it take to do it safely of the 8V.1 platform?

 

 

The second phase required a full build and although I didn’t have the money to do it, I certainly couldn’t stop without knowing where we could take the car. Decision was made and the research done on the parts we needed.

 

This was a big build for sure and we added big cams as well as uprated LPFP and HPFP along with the addition of NOS. This was always a part of the plan as it meant I had a great car to use and live with day to day with just 98 and WMI (E85 for me was a no go as it is just too hard for me to get hold of it where I live in Aus) and then for drag days the addition of the NOS allowed us to gas the car up and gain the extra torque and hp we needed to try for 9’s.

 

The outcome of this build was a car that repeated back to back dynos of around 410wkw and for us in Aus we estimate this to equates to around 770hp. The turbo was fully maxed out at this, but the AFR’s were perfect and the car had zero timing pull on every run. We left boost relatively low at around 25psi but developed several tunes with boost up to 32psi using a different MAP sensor. On the dyno this tune was incredible, but on the road, it had throttle closure in 3rd and 4th gears.

 

After making the decision to make a sudden move to France before Brexit we had only a few weeks left to get the track time we needed to see what the car was capable of. Our first outing was to a private track day at Eastern Creek International Dragway. We knew the car could run low 10’s and possibly quicker, but dyno numbers do not always equate to great times. The car was now stripped, dump pipe on and I had managed to get a set of 18” Neuspeed Rse10’s and some Hoosier DR2’s for the day. Hopefully this would enable us to get the 60ft’s we needed to crack the times we wanted.

 

On the day the car was just incredible and on the very first run after a bogged launch due to major user error by me it ran 10.29 with a 60ft of 1.78 @ 137.8mph. We were on the money and if I could get the launch right, we now knew it could possibly do a 9 second pass.

 

The problem for us was the temperature was rising quickly up into the 30’s. We managed 3 more runs in the high 20’s and managed a 10.22 best with another very average 60ft of 1.73 again @ 137mph. From then on although we managed more 10.2’s the trap speeds were coming down. I was getting the 60ft’s down and ended up with a 1.600 on the last run with an ET of 10.8 but at only 134 mph

The car was incredible and showed what the 8V.1 platform is capable of. In the right conditions we know this car can run 9’s. Of note was the 100-200km time of 5.44 again showing what the car can do in less than ideal conditions. I should also say that luckily, I ran Dragy alongside the track timing as they had issues on some runs. Dragy is in my testing sometimes slightly slower than the track timing, so the 10.22 could have been one 10th faster.

 

I want to give a big shout out to Shaunee on his continued build and to Nathan Bee who has become a messenger mate and fellow member of the Kia Stinger Lovers group over here in Aus, he is doing more development on his PFL right now as well.

 

Its been a fun journey and I am gutted that I will now not get the chance to really enjoy the car. For now though it’s off to France and the Citroen Cactus before maybe a new RS3 build in France in the coming years.

Well done to you and all involved. 

 

It's fantastic to see the fruits of your labour as I know none of this has come easy..... which is par for the course when you go down this route.  There's so much "promise" out there in the tuning industry (from others) and as you know the promise of what others give is far from the truth when you come to do it yourself. There are not many big builds out there and you quickly discover that things are not as straight forward as others "marketing" alludes to.  Stage 1, 2 and 3 lower power hybrid routes are relatively straight forward...... but when you go to a full big turbo build (and the much bigger hybrids) you start hitting brick walls FAST.  Most people end up developing as they go along.

 

The worst thing is, is that you can talk to say the top 3-4 Audi tuners and they all tell you something different!!! lol

 

It's a great shame that you will be leaving the car and I'm sure you will be doing something else in the future.

 

A car that performs in this bracket is a SERIOUSLY fast car. 100-200 in the mid 5's is flaming fast.

 

It's a shame you never got that elusive 9's pass..... but based on your 60ft (and what it could be capable of) it definitely has the potential.

 

What would be really great is if you give a summary of all the bits and pieces you had done to the car. It outlines the depths you went to.

770hp is a tad mental, any issues with running it day to day or isn't it a daily?

Thanks guys, it was certainly a journey that's for sure. I will get onto doing a more detailed build summary when I get to France its hectic at the moment and trying to source a Citroen Cactus is proving difficult  :D

 

Yeh it is my daily car although I don't do a lot of km's as I work from home. In all honesty when I run it in comfort it is just like it was stock. It's quite as a mouse and still quite good on fuel. This is the real amazing thing about the RS3, it can be modded just about as far as it can be taken and still behave itself on the road. I keep my car completely stock from the outside so as to not draw attention as well.
