Looking for help from anyone really.
I have a P3 multi gauge that plugs in to the obd port and fits in the dash vent.
When the gauge is active I suffer from poor DAB signal.
To the point the stations come and go.
I have tried putting the control unit in a faraday bag thinking this would stop any unwanted interference.
This has made no difference at all!
Strangely I notice an slight improvement if I turn the headlamps on!!
The gauge works perfectly it’s just the dab I’m having issues with.
Any ideas?

You really need to speak to P3 technical support if they have one as the unit connects into the canbus lines & thats probably the root of your problem mate.

The unit will be inducing interferance by its connections the your vehicles electrics (conducted emmissions) by the ODB connection. Either the unit has a fault or it has not been tested to or complies to the European Automtive EMC directive - 2004/104/EC & ISO 7637-2: 2002

I would refer back to the supplier / manufactuer of the P3 multi guage.

Thanks for the replies on this.
I’ve tried wrapping the box and the cabling in foil today with no difference.
If I unplug the display from the box it makes no difference but as soon as I plug the power supply from the box all returns to normal!
I’ll contact P3 and see what they have to say

The foil won't be of much use just wrapping around everything as it needed to be grounded to cancel out any cross talk if its the the wiring/control unit.

The internal wire is normally twisted pairs & shielded to ground to cancel out these type of problems.

Yeah was just something to try but as you say makes no difference.
I even tried repositioning the box but it’s obviously an interference coming from the box not because it’s in range of something.
I’ll see what P3 have to say tomorrow.

I should add I’d like a fix for it cause I like the way it looks and operates so hopefully get it resolved.

What did you not like about the spacers Kev ? Noticed you were selling them.

I’m currently running a set of facelift blade wheels that’ve been refurbed in gloss black (shocking refurb) that’ll I’ll get done properly.
The offset is different to my standard rotors and it’s the staggered setup so 8:5 upfront car handles and feels so much better on them.
Therefore no need for the spacers, saying that if I don’t get what I want for them I’ll be keeping them.

Yeah that’s them.
The car suits them and the R02 having the big rim protector on.
Not sure what cowboy done the refurb but think I could’ve done better with a rattle can

Unfortunatly wrapping the box in foil grounded or un-grounded will not make any differance as the noise is not 'Radiated' emmissions. It is 'Conducted' emmissions, that is being conducted through the connections from the box through to your vehicle electrics. From what you are saying above, it looks very much like the power supply within the box tha plugs into the ODB port that is generating the emmissions. It looks like there is defective or No / Incorrect EMC filtering on the power supply input lines & that'll be where the 'Conducted emmissions' will be travelling back into your cars electrics.

Well here’s the reply from P3

Thank you for contacting us. Out of the 1000's of gauges we have sold, I have only had one other report of this. In that case we had the customer wrap the control box in tin foil to verify that the interference was coming from the control box itself. If many different variables are all lined up (such as the angle and orientation of the control box) it is possible for there to be RF interfering with radio signals.

If that solves the issue and you prefer not to have tin foil wrapped around your control box you can open the box and line the inside with foil type duct taping and then line the inside of that layer with a different type of tape that is non-conductive so that the circuit board is not affected.

Please let us know if you have any other questions, this should take care of the issue for you.

So they are not complient with the European Automtive EMC directive - 2004/104/EC & ISO 7637-2: 2002

Because if they complient with the European Automtive EMC directive  you wouldnt need to wrap the control box in tin foil.
The worrying point here is if the Radiated or Conducted emissions interfear with othe vehicle electronics, like ECU, Traction control or ABS ECU's  :o

Would it be possible to temporarily power the box from a separate power supply ie battery to see if that solves it.

Not an option, the power supply and data connection is like a very thin band cable line you get inside computers where there’s no individual wires.
I’ll try the foil inside the box then cover with tape and give that a try although I’ve already tried wrapping g the box in foil.
Probably doesn’t help that dab signal round here isn’t great anyway so probably wouldn’t be a problem if I lived in a strong signal area.

Just an update on this.
P3 are sending me a replacement control unit to try and resolve this.
Fingers crossed
