Hi all,

Got a bit of creaking at low speed coming from front passenger footwell, mainly on cold days, and only noticeable at low speed (assume cabin noise takes over at higher speed).
So I am assuming the gearbox mount is on it way out.
There is a video from ECS and Black Forest on replacing the mount on a 8p s3 and I have read the replacement guide on Elsawin for the RS3. Seems similar minus the supporting of gearbox...

Elsawin shows some fancy top mounted winch pulley thing. The videos and guides for the s3 just show supporting the gearbox with a trolley jack.

Is it ok to do this on ours? I assume you just jack it up and remove the plastics covers under the engine. Then once removed where do you place the trolley to support the box?

Has anyone ever done a diy gearbox mount replacement?
Mounts are expensive but I assume if it’s starting creaking it best to replace to prevent damage to gearbox or prop shaft?

Sorry for all the newbie questions! All words of wisdom are greatly appreciated!

Pretty simple.

Remove airbox to expose gearbox mount.
Order new gearbox mount along with new bolts (important) approx £300-£350.
Using trolley jack support the gearbox from underneath to take the weight/stress of the mount.
Undo 3x bolts on mount.
Replace component.
Install new bolts, torque them up.
Release weight from jack.
Refit air box
Test drive

Afternoon tea?? How very English. I assume custard creams are a toolbox essential?

Thanks Jay!!!! Yes the new bolts!!!! They stretch right? So one time use.

It’s purely the supporting the gearbox that was making me nervous. Am I right in assuming the plastic cover underneath needs to come off?

Any advice on jack placement?

correct, undertray off.

When it’s off you’ll see the gearbox clearer, just find a relatively flat-ish area that’s central and you’ll be fine. Only needs the weight taking off it slightly.

Under tray off & then lift the gearbox to take the weight without it going pissed or your have problems aligning the bolts when refitting the mount.

Bristol based unfortunately Dell. But I would probably make the journey in the future.

But this time I reckon from the info I already had and guidance above (thanks Jay & Dell) I should be able to replace it myself. I absolutely love the car so I am really keen to work on it myself as much as possible (tools and ability allowing!)

Shame 034 haven’t sorted out a street density oem replacement.

Can anymore confirm if this is a genuine RS gearbox mount? Been provided the dealer who sold the car to me. He described its condition as “like new, only used briefly, can hardly tell it’s been used”.

Based on the oxidation on the casting I am not convinced. Rubber seems ok, and the back plate. Which further makes me wonder whether it’s refurbed, possibly original casting by new internal runners and back plate.

Also creaks and squeaks like an old bed and has a lot of front to back movement, is that normal? How stiff should the mount be? YouTube video to follow once I work out how to upload.

Thanks in advance guys!!!
