I have just come up with a great idea......

If you have a Focus RS set up a smoke house and drive around with meat hanging off your bumper when you drive.....

Alternatively you could join the army and use your car for tactical smoke cover....

It’ll still have that ‘open deck’ cylinder block design.

So your suggestion is all it’s useful for in my opinion.

Agreed, my RS Turbo had the stem seals go hard and cause smoke at 40k. I replaced them with Cossie ones and it was ok after that.

I gues RS Focus forums are laughing at threads about RS3 brakes and exhausts to be fair. 😂

There’s a guy on YouTube that as been reporting on his car since it’s new engine. Might not be everyone’s cup of tea but worth a watch how he describes things.

Stu.

The valve stem seals used to ride up the valve stem allowing the oil to run down the valve.

The modified stem seal i beleave had a spacer on it to keep the seal in place.

If you had the right tool you could replace them without removing the head.

I owned both of these

In fact I had 3 GTE’s (1.8 8V / 2.0 16V / 2.0 8V).

The 16v car was a rocket in its day
Just had to make sure the head wasn’t porous.

Amazing looking at the spec's of those two Sean, they seem trivial by today's standards. but were the things to have back in the day.

Would love to have a drive in one of those now, just to see how things have moved on.

Dell.

Yes Dell

If i remember correctly the Coscast heads were the ones to have for a chance of avoiding a porous cylinder head :)

The Red top was such a good engine.

I later bought a 16v Calibra that i knew had the oil / water mixing, so got it for next to nothing, stripped down the engine and sent the head away to a firm just past Chester i recall, they drilled across the problem oil gallery then inserted a tiny tube to reinforce it.

Had the head skimmed at the same time then put it all back together.....ran like a dream after.

Agreed

The XR3i made a pretty good noise i remember at the time....

Getting into the GTE though seemed a world apart with its fancy Digi-dash and 148hp

Although cornering and rear arch rust were it's achilles heel

Things moved on when they started turbo charging it though with the later C20LET then the Z20LET /Z20LEH  :)

I remember having a high lift-cam & solid lifers fitted to my XR3i together with the Bosh K - jetronic re -adjusted with race plugs - made a big difference but did suffer with a lumpy tic-over  B) Also sounded nice from recollection.

LOL sounds like American cars, Ok in a straight line!

I have an idea: my head gasket has blown so I'm going to run it and rev it to make sure the water is actually passing to the exhaust via the head...

Anyway, there's a guy I work with who has one of these, and Ford dealers seem to be as popular as Audi ones. He had to go and check himself if his car was one for the recall for the gasket. Turns out his is one of those, Ford didn't even have the decency to contact him!
