Daft reply - have you tried a different battery? For the money and time spent it might be the quick fix

There's no quick fixes on these RSs when you have an intermittent fault like Jays been having mate.  :(

All you end up doing is blanked covering by changing bit till you loose the fault. :(

Its getting to look like a change to a different style of spark plug tip but with the same temperature range may be the way forward. :)

I’ve got a question on my battery. It had been fine though all thecold weather and me working away 3 weeks on 3 weeks off. I get home today and go to start the car and it’s just clicking. Spoke with my mate to get a jump start and she fires up fine of course. I stoped the car about 20 miles later and it’s still dead. Got another jump start and drove 70 miles home, left the car for an hour or so and it started again no problem. Just checked again now and it’s dead. My question is would the battery just give up all of a sudden or do I have a short somewhere causing it to drain?

How old is the battery for starters ?

Once you jump started it the car will run off the alternator & charge the battery but once you stop & if the batterys faulty you won't get it to start again without a jump.

Get the battery checked properly & when your away leave it on a trickle/float charger.

Batterys don't last forever 5/6 years depending on usage mate.

Not sure how old it is to be honest, I’ll have a look in the morning.

I’m going to check he battery with VCDS and see what it says, had a look at prices and though £175 was steep till I seen what Euros are charging £300+ 😂

Cheers Jay, it seems the dearer ones are more suited to the 8V due to the stop/start system.

I gave them the part number from my existing old battery and the only thing that’s changed is the end letter. Mines been fine, no issues what so ever on my 8P.

So last just when I tried the car it wouldn’t start just the sounds of the relays clicking. Came out this morning and checked the battery with a multi meter. It was sitting at 12.2v, turned the ignition on and it started to drop fairly quickly, I switched the ignition off at 11.2v I’ve had the multi meter on it again and it’s slowly coming back up. Jump started it again and the multi meter is reading 14.7v when th car is running anyway.

Does this sound like a dodgy battery or short else where?

Alternator looks ok at 14.7 running.

First thing I’d replace is battery due to its age alone in this instance. In the rare case it’s not the problem, you would have prevented a future issue anyway so not lost money.

I’m pleasantly suprised at the oem cost. For that, I’d budget another 60quid for a Ctek MXS5.0 maintenance trickle charger ( can just see its connector and croc clips in Jay’s photo. ) for extended life.

The battery's NFG mate if the voltage drops like that with the ignition is switched on,have you looked at what year it was made ?

As Paul said the alternator is fine at 14.7v running.

Like Paul i use a Ctek charge to keep my battery in tip top condition when not being used for sometime & in the winter months.

I have the remote charger plug in the engine bay connected to the jump start point.

I'm still using the original battery in mine with not problems by looking after it & its now 6 years old mate. :)

Mines a 2012 on its original battery, maintained by Ctek periodically.

Normally I charge it from the boot aux socket, today with the car the other way round, I’ve used the jump posts.

Other family cars I’ve installed Cteks permanent connector, so no need to deal with messy greasy battery posts.

Has been said before you battery is knackered. The cold crank amps have deteriorated so much that it hasn’t got the power on tap to turn over the engine. No trickle Charging is going to recoup the loses. Alternator is fine but battery is to far gone by the sounds of it.

I ordered a new battery from TPS earlier. Charger is not an option for me unfortunately, my car is left in the secure car park at work when I’m offshore.

Alright boys, thought i'd resurrect an old battery thread rather than start a new one.

8P RS3 Battery questions.

Mine has died and looking for replacements.

All the batteries that are listed for the 8P RS3 are AGM and spec'd for Stop-Start and Regenerative Brake Systems which the 8P doesn't have.

Not only are the AGM batteries expensive they are bloody big and heavy. A conventional battery of similar spec would be roughly be 4-6kgs lighter and cost less.

Has anyone tried a conventional style battery and are there any technical issues I don't know about that will scupper my plan?

Yuasa Silver HSB010 fitted, no codes, no issues. Fired up beautifully, saved some coin and 5.2kg.
