Slightly before the mileage and year but I've booked the RS to get the gearbox oil/filter changed along with doing the air conditioning service on the 29th Dec. This will be the last piece of the puzzle since owning this car where every single filter/ oil/ plug/ service requirement has been replaced in my 16 month of ownership. My mind will then be settled.

What method do Audi use for the gearbox oil change? Will the air box need to be removed to access the filter?

Out of curiosity the AC service I have no doubt that it's one of them 5min jobs that sounds great on paper but merely check refrigerant levels and top up (maybe if low). Other than that.... any thing else involved? It's one of them services that I begrudge paying for purely because I doubt it even gets done.

Anyone know the part number for the pollen filter?

Air con service should include an Antibacterial Clean ,you'll notice the difference as the car should smell fresh.

The 'normal' method (i did this on the TT we had) was to get the fluid warm (above 30 deg C rings a bell VCDS can give this info)

The car has to be on level ground (obviously a dealer ramp/Lift is level anyway)

The Drain plug is removed from under the box, fluid drained out, then the plastic 'snorkel' is unscrewed from just inside the drain hole

On the TT i removed the air filter assembly and trunking to give better access, i'd imagine Audi would do the same, then undo the plastic filter housing that's on top of the gear box, near the gear oil cooler.......

Extract paper filter and 'O' ring, clean excess oil spilt, then insert new paper element and 'O' ring, then screw on the plastic cover and Torque up (20 nm if memory serves)

Plastic Snorkel is screwed back in first....

The new box fluid is pumped in through the drain hole (i bought a Sealey pressure pump with 5 litre capacity) Audi have a special valve tool that screws onto the Oil bottles and works via gravity (and squeezing the bottle to a degree)

Once the required amount has been put in (5.5-6 litres on the TT,  ETKA says 7 Litres for the RS3) the filler is unscrewed

Engine started to get the new fluid warm (again VCDS is needed to monitor temp) DSG is cycled through P,R,N,D a couple of times

Back under the gearbox and once the fluid reaches the required temp any excess fluid has drained back out (the snorkel sets the fluid level) so as the fluid warms up and expands this regulates the level in the box, a little drips back out, this usually stops then you can put the drain plug/ washer back in and torque up.

Job done.

AC service, you'll usually get the car back with a lovely smelling interior, as they use an anti-bacterial cleaner on the interior part.........

Plus you should notice the A/C is 'cooler' then before you went in, as the system will loose gas over the years.

The Pollen Filter Part number is *Edited*1K2 819 653 B  just check this this jay as the etka drawing isn't 100% clear

Just got car back from dealer... and they've given me the checklist for the DSG oil replacement but no mention of filter change on the paperwork/invoice. They've also scrubbed out 'filter' in the service book and just included oil. The car is at 35k when it's not due till 38k but surely that's not why they wouldn't have replaced it? Am I missing something?

Also another question... when they do the dsg service will they reset it too? So will I have to go through all the modes/gears gradually to re learn habits etc?

I'm pretty sure that if you check the Audi service book it quotes oil change without filter on the RS3 so unless you specified it they wouldn't do it.
I don't bother with Audi anymore and get all servicing done by an independent for these exact reasons

Yes, fluid change would have meant a reset so it'll need time to learn.

Who knows Jay.....
If you want a job doing properly an all that.......

You may be able to see the if the filter housing on top of the Gearbox shows signs of being disturbed......

This maybe little comfort, but I was told by a renowned Gearbox specialist in Nottingham, that the biggest issue he sees with DSG boxes is the fact that there's a large filter actually 'inside' the box itself that is never changed because it's not accessible !
He told me it makes changing the outer one a farce because the 'inner' one is permanently dirty.

Hi,
Erm would you mind explaining the bit about gearbox having to learn as it's been reset?

I've pinged them an email to see what they say and will moan if I get a sh*t excuse. Just surprises me that if the oil needs replacing at a certain mileage then why wouldn't you change the filter (the accessible one at least). Is the gearbox filter housing under the air box or different on the RS?

Jay

Look in-between the inlet trunking and the bulkhead on passenger side you should just be able to see it.......

If it's been disturbed I'll bet there will be oil residue around its base and possibly on top of the box, they won't clean any spillage off because they won't be arsed.

If that's the kiddy with the corrugated silver stuff round the housing then it's bone dry

Out of curiosity was is that cable underneath it (looking at the picture)

That's it Jay....

Looks bone dry around the base, if it's been off you'd expect to see residue of fluid, even it had been wiped off.

The cable is indeed the one that operates the box.

Keep an eye on it where it goes into the heat shield area, I had mine changed on the MK1 because it had rubbed through the outer sleeve.

To me it's a pointless exercise changing the Fluid but not the filter.......

The response from Audi

"I have spoken to Dan and he said the gearbox filter is not changed at the time of a gearbox oil change. It is only changed if the gearbox need to be changed."

Personally I can't see the point of new oil with an old filter, there's only so much crap a filter can hold before it fails to do it's job.

I've asked a local garage who the owner used to be ex Audi technician at the same dealership I went too to see what he says about it all. I'll just buy the part and get him to replace it.
Any ideas to the part number for the gearbox filter? I'm assuming as it's the highest point the oil won't need replacing again?
