I started a chat on the new owners section back August when one of the observant members pointed out I had bought a car with a disastrous history which had been discussed at length...
I asked a lot of members at Castle Combe about the problem but no joy.
Loud grating metallic sound on hard left handers - this stopped me driving the track very confidently let alone on the road!
Have been hunting this down for 3 months.
Been to Volkscraft initially who suggested the caliper was out of line with disc on OSF front and it was a an engineering problem so I should go back to Audi....They did not want to touch it due to 3K spent in 2014 and warranty voided due to remap. Last advice from Audi UK was to get a new gearbox at 8K expense to me.
Reported this to VOSA - who suggested new hub and bearings - this was done at warranty and I have done it again - no difference.
Irritated that Audi refused to investigate the problem even though a dangerous brake problem had been suggested....that's another sad and common theme of Audi I gather.
Had new discs and pads with no change...
New control arm bushes as there was play.....no diference
Kept on reading and reading on the sites to try and work out myself but I am no mechanic.
Finally went to an old fashioned workshop in Honiton (Paul Richards) who states 'I will sort this out mate' 'it is a process of elimination' ....to quote the owner
4 days of investigation and a lot of thought. Mechanic even took caliper off and drove without to find noise still there so noise is not coming from front wheel. Progress.
Out of desperation I suggested ? engine mounts warn having seen this on a website somewhere....
sure enough 2 inches of play and with wood chocks in test drive .....no noise!
At last it is sorted.
Thanks to the RS3OC I would not have known where to start so can again say that it is great to be part of this club and the benefits it brings
Thought some of you doubting ones should here the end of this story
I now have a nice RS3 with lots of freebies from Audi to keep me going!
Happy Days
