Even in the original mini they decided it was a bad idea and installed regular clocks behind the wheel.

I didn't mean it was a good idea! LOL

However the original one had it simply because it was cheaper for left and right hand drive versions. The clocks moved behind the steering wheel for the Clubman versions and then later when Rover took the helm (if I remember correctly!)
