So we picked up our 8p Monday! We didn't go for a low millage car with great history and well maintained. We went for the worst one we could find, no point having a car we want to promote and not learning all of its faults.

So what did we find, a 8p that had 2 stamps with 100k plus on. Body work is pretty good, engine not so great with rattles & clunks.

Today we got the RS3 up on the ramp for a full inspection.

We quickly learnt the gearbox mount was shoot, front discs, Flywheel, chain rattle when hot, lower cam cover leaking, coolant leak & the back box has a rattle.

So we replaced all oils, filters, fuilds, spark plugs and gearbox mount. We have decided to pull the box off over the festive season as work load atm just isn't viable for us to do this now.
We will be replacing the complete timing chain, guides, sprockets and flywheel.

We don't want to start tuning until it's in perfect condition.

More updates to follow.

Lol yes it does seem this way! We are also going to be removing the inlet manifold to see how bad this motor suffers with carbon. As it's done 100k I would imagine this will be a very good example.

Another little update.

I maintain a s4 b5 for 1 of the Audi techs in my local area. ( I know don't say it lol) I gave him a quick call to see if the car has had any software updates ie oil pressure solenoid So After explaining for nearly 2 hours and speaking to there master tech they finally understood what i was talking about lol.

So they popped down grabbed my turd and changed the tpi code and result no chain rattle (for now). So this as gave us some breathing space to proceed and put at least a stage 1 map on .

New disc ordered to be here Monday, just need to sort some decent pads. My usual preference is ferodo, we have used them on all our s/rs models and seem to work great.

I’m with you on Ferodo pads.

The DS performance are great non squealing pad and get better the more they are used on both 8P and 8V.

Now the fun begins!

Removed the box today and timing chain covers. Didn't get much more done. Customers demanding my attention! Typical Saturday.

I am struggling to upload photos on here, for those interested I have chucked a few up on instagram.

Tbh no I didn't! They work just fine, if I do get issues then I will just swap them out, only have to remove top chain cover. It isn't to much of a big job.

Thats the part that usually fails making the chain noise.

I had the same noise on my 8P a few years ago. Bolton Audi said it was the first one to be fixed in this country.Good job it was under warranty.Only took them 12 weeks!!! Audi GB told them to change everything chain related, tensioners, guides, chains ,and the sprockets because they weren`t sure which part was at fault. All the parts were sent off to be inspected . Everything was found to be ok apart from the sprockets which are made by a third party.Since then I`ve heard of quite a few others with the same issue.Personally I think it`s to do with the ridiculously long oil changes. When mine started to make the noise the oil stunk of petrol yet the dash said I still had thousands of miles to the next change. After all these sprockets are hydraulically operated by the oil.

my understanding of the VVT is to advance and retard timing for peak power and fuel, if 1 did fail you would have loss in power and possibly poor tick over, i can not see in any shape how this can cause chain rattle.

IMO Audi are very good at not knowing or owning up to there problems, i personally think they messed up and should of activated your higher oil pressure.

Audi did activate the higher oil pressure.Made sod all difference.Changed the oil and the pressure relief valve all to no avail. At low rpm the sprockets have less oil pressure and if there`s any wear in these parts the two halves rattle about hence the noise. You can check it with VCDS .Check actual and specified cam timing if it makes the rattle.

We are fully aware of vcds timing logs, something we have used for many years now, especially when we use the cable for me7 logger ;)

I'm happy to be proven wrong but the set up of the pullys just can't cause chain rattle. Unless the rattle came from the pullys not the chain??

FML! Are these cars designed to always be broke??

So this morning we came to the RS3 pressed the unlock button and the DRL didn't come on. I went to the shop in it to get some milk, came back out to it and it didn't unlock. (the lock works the boot button works.) something else to add to the list.

Older cars will always have issues I’m afraid.

Just more expensive ones when it’s an RS.
