Android Auto does seem a bit pants to me - I have my daughter's IPhone paired (made the mistake of taking her with me when collecting the car from the dealer) so might plug that in to see if Car Play is any better.
It does let you pull Waze through to the nav if you want it so you get the choice of Audi, Google maps/Earth or Waze.
