After a incident last week when I went to over take when it was damp and the car was pulling about at the front like crazy I went and bought a new Haldex pump, fliter and oil and replaced them yesterday. When I took the pump off I used a power probe and the pump sprung into life. Which got me slightly concerned! As I knew I wouid have the car up on a two poster I though I would do the rear diff and transfer box oil at the same time. Rear diff oil came out nice and golden, when I took the top plug out of the transfer box I could smell the acrid smell from burnt gear oil, anyway I drained it out and it was dark brown. Now feeling quite concerned I asked Dave ay DH Automotive near me and he instantly suspected the transfer box, he said to put the car on the ramp again and leave it in park and try and turn the prop shaft, if it turns I would know the transfer box is goosed, by this point I was back home.
So this morning I raised the front end on axle stands and tried to turn the prop shaft with sliding jaw pliers. My question is should the prop shaft turn quite easily? As I couldn’t turn it at all. I’m using an educated guess and thinking the rear does not have to be off the ground as the Haldex coupling will be de energised while the car is off.
