Morning guys,

After a incident last week when I went to over take when it was damp and the car was pulling about at the front like crazy I went and bought a new Haldex pump, fliter and oil and replaced them yesterday. When I took the pump off I used a power probe and the pump sprung into life. Which got me slightly concerned! As I knew I wouid have the car up on a two poster I though I would do the rear diff and transfer box oil at the same time. Rear diff oil came out nice and golden, when I took the top plug out of the transfer box I could smell the acrid smell from burnt gear oil, anyway I drained it out and it was dark brown. Now feeling quite concerned I asked Dave ay DH Automotive near me and he instantly suspected the transfer box, he said to put the car on the ramp again and leave it in park and try and turn the prop shaft, if it turns I would know the transfer box is goosed, by this point I was back home.

So this morning I raised the front end on axle stands and tried to turn the prop shaft with sliding jaw pliers. My question is should the prop shaft turn quite easily? As I couldn’t turn it at all. I’m using an educated guess and thinking the rear does not have to be off the ground as the Haldex coupling will be de energised while the car is off.

I’ve asked him to get me a ruff price and I’ll be putting it in to him.

Just trying to satisfy my curiosity in the meantime 😂

The prop won`t turn in Park. It might rock a bit back and forth though.

Put in Neutral (engine off) .

Both front wheels TURNING SAME WAY prop will turn.

One front turning one way other turning opposite (due to diff) prop won`t turn.

One front wheel turning other locked up prop will turn.

My understanding of the way Dave told me was that the prop shaft would turn if I tried to turn it even in park as there wouid be no positive connection between the dog in the gearbox, transfer box and prop if the transfer box had given up.

I get what you’re saying though. Anyway I tired both in park and in neutral with the front off the ground and couldn’t turn the prop. I will give turning both wheels a shot and see what happens.

Gearbox and transfer box and prop are all connected by gears permanently. There is no "dog" that engages / disengages. The only interruption in the driveline is the clutch inside the haldex at the rear before the diff.

If the transfer box has given up the ghost then the prop should turn.

The dog when the gear selectors in park that engages the flywheel?

Oh that dog. It doesn`t engage on the flywheel ,it locks up the gearbox. Because the gearbox ,transfer box and prop are connected if one is locked up so are the rest.
